I knew you had a thread on your quince @Clicio. You should try and update this thread for progression documentation. Since both are blooming...share a photo of each tree along with a close up of the bloom. Then in a few years...and you've developed them further...the thread is here to keep track of the process. Makes it fun for one to keep track of their progress.

I was told that japanese quince leaves can form in clusters and often have a small round looking leaf that forms.
The chinese quince grows a single leaf not clusters and does not have the small round leaves.
I recently asked a similar question and that was the information i got.

Well, the Japanese little Quince is blooming all over, while the chinese has only two flowers. Below, the Japanese this morning.

And a picture of the Chinese one? Should clear this up right quick if you share that. Chinese quince are a bit reticent about blooming when young, so I would imagine they are both Japanese, the picture should tell the story.

The closed bud looks like Pseudocydonia to me, they look like a lipstick before they open. They normally have 5 petals, and are a cup shaped petal usually smooth, with no frills. So the open one is not what I've seen, but maybe it's just not smooth as it's still in the process of opening.
I'll bet someone here can ID this better and more accurately than me.

@Cadillactaste would that be a Japanese as well since the leaves are growing in clusters?

That is one of the reasons I started this thread, I couldn't find the obvious differences between the two, I don't have access to other examples around here, and when researching on the Internet, the confusion became bigger.
Anyway I am glad you guys are trying to put it in its right place!

google images of "Japanese quince leaves" and "Chinese quince leaves" you should see what I am saying about leaf clusters. the Chinese quince images show a single leaf forming from each bud where the Japanese form more like yours. I don't know if there are other varieties that do this but Chinese doesn't seem to be one.

Yes, you are right, but not all images, when searched, show single or paired leaves instead of clusters.
On my first try on Google, it came up with... Clusters.

Karin, I've heard it before, brought me to Wikipedia https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pseudocydonia... and Karin is how it's called in Japan.

Chinese Quince have alternating leaves on a branch...not clusters. (Though at The end of a branch where new growth is pushing it can offer sometimes a cluster appearance until The branch extends.) The leaf pattern shown on this post is clustered. Tagged wrong most likely. Lovely bloom none the less. Honestly Japanese quince are lovely...very showy trees which readily bloom easily
To research cultivar I would stick to nursery sites who most likely have a grasp of what they are selling. Anyone can have their tree Id's incorrectly. It happens all the time. I've seen Bougainvillea listed as azalea for example on Google image search.
Having had both Japanese...and Chinese quince...seeing first hand leaf pattern. I just don't see a Chinese variety there. The bloom is off...the leaf in clusters. But the bloom is stunning! ?
