Any first hand experience with “fromjapan-kt.com”or “j-bonsai.com”?

I've purchased from J Bonsai with success. Certain items they have can work out to be cheaper than you can find them in the US. Good tip is to buy when the value of the dollar is high compared to the Yen. Also, if you use their slowest and cheapest shipping option-which takes a very long...

    New Korean Hornbeam

Thank you @cmeg1 Yah know this is a very interesting topic that i'm not qualified to answer. But I too am very curious about! Someone once told me that one of the two scientific names were outdated and they are the same thing. The differences are simply genetic based off which seed you...

    New Korean Hornbeam

Thank you! I entered two trees to the Expo this year, but they were two other trees. I want to improve this tree for several years before showing it. Will you be there? Are you showing anything? @misfit11

    New Korean Hornbeam

Hey Fellow Bnuts! Sharing my most recent addition to the Bonsai collection. This tree is definitely the closest thing to show ready that i've ever purchased. It's a Korean Hornbeam, est. around 100 yrs old, about 29 inches tall. I believe this was originally a single trunk tree and someone...

    Yamadori air layering

A super important concept is the fact that success with air layers improves greatly depending on the vigor of the tree. The more vigorous/healthy the tree is the better chance for a successful air layer. If the tree is super healthy and growing strongly in the ground currently, then you'd...

Grafting theoretical question for tighter bends

On Junipers you 100% can do that. I've seen it done at Aichi-En with success.

    Watering globes for bonsai?

Unfortunately, I don't think these would be a good idea. In the Bonsai container, you want to really saturate the soil, then let it dry out. I think these would un evenly distribute water and keep the soil wet for too long. Also, less control in general and possibility of failure.

Pacific Bonsai Expo, October 26-27, 2024, Oakland, CA

So pumped for this event, I'm sure it will be absolutely incredible!!! I'll be submitting two trees. The PBE is definitely the thing I look most forward this year. Hope to see other BNuts there:)

    Juniper & spider mites

My go to sprays are Avid, Captin Jack's Dead Bug and Clean Green Miticide-Insecticide which I rotate and spray every 1-1.5 months. Then if I actually see spider mites, i'll break out the Floramite or Sultan. If I find spider mites on a plant, i'll make sure to come back and spray 2-4 times...

Another what kind of juniper post

Hey Brentwood, I think it will be hard to say for anyone what type of juniper it is with a lot of certainty. Partially hard because of the juvenile foliage. I think it would be a great grafting project. Throw some scion grafts wrapped in buddy tape of whichever variety you'd like. Make some...

Does it exist? Non grafted apple cultivars?

I love the idea, wish there was-i'd buy a few. I actually planted a few apple trees at the house, partially for the apples and partially because I wanted to take airlayers:)

    The Black Pondo Podcast-Beta Testing

New one with the incredible guys at Backcountry Bonsai! I want to apologize as I didn't do the best job in wording everyone's questions. Hope you still enjoy it and really appreciate the questions you all asked!

    The Black Pondo Podcast-Beta Testing

Shoot I need to look up the name, I should know and give credit. I bought the rights to use the music on a podcast a few years back, I'll find the artist.

Colorado’s Randy Knight Rocky Mountain Juniper

Taking your time on deadwood decisions is smart! You can always reduce, much harder to add! ;)

    A Trident maple

Hey, this is not a Trident Maple as in the common type we see for Bonsai -Acer Buergerianum. However it does have three lobes similar to a Trident. I'd recommend growing it out and thickening the trunk for several years which will create a more impressive final Bonsai. Congrats on your new tree!

Colorado’s Randy Knight Rocky Mountain Juniper

Very nice! I like the movement and deadwood on this tree, great work with it:) Would you ever consider shortening the top two jins? It's totally just personal preference, however my eyes are drawn to the top jins quite a bit. As the foliage fills out it will be less so. However, the top two...

    Bonsai soil origins?

Never really thought about it, however I imagine Japan has used Akadama specifically which is granular from very early on-150+ years-maybe earlier. Akadama is a volcanic soil which is the most commonly used soil for growing all different plants in Japan. Likely same story for Kanuma around the...
