    Nandina Bamboo

I had a nandina about 10 years ago that I really liked. A hailstorm damaged it severely and it never recovered. The seasonal color was really nice though (green, yellow, red).

SI have decided to go back into bonsaiNut seclusion.ee ya guys.

What? If you choose not to share, then what do we lose if you aren't active? That seriously makes no freaking sense.

    Cedar elm progress pics

Weather was ok, so I took a bunch off this one. Branch structure had been neglected, there were lots of dead twigs, and some insect damage. Hopefully this helps bring it back on track. Still needs a lot of work.

Weather permitting I hope to thin this one out tomorrow.

Here are update pics for a handful of elm trees. They all just got a little spring haircut to let some light into the interior branches.

    Bonsai in Dallas, Suggestions

Dallas Bonsai is basically internet only at this point, and not open to walk-in customers. Sunshine is barely bonsai, mostly overpriced tropicals and houseplants with some crummy junipers mixed in. The Fort Worth Botanic Garden is cool, relatively close to Sanderson Creek, and is free except for...

    chinese elm mallsai

I agree. After it settles into this pot I'm gonna put a guy wire on it and pull it down to the left. I'll thin it out and reevaluate when it drops its leaves.

    chinese elm mallsai

Thanks! It's definitely an odd one, and the pot is bad for sure. I just didn't have a bunch to choose from at repotting time, and have never really liked this one enough to seek out a pot for it. I was thinking I'd find a good rock to plant it in eventually.

Three more years update...crown is getting a little heavy.

    Cedar elm progress pics

I gotta let it be for a while since I just repotted it, so I have some time to study it a bit. I kinda had in my head that I'd eventually put a guy wire on the first branch on the left, and pull it and the whole tree down and to the left a couple degrees. It still needs some tweaking for sure...

Wow, thanks guys! My goal is to get one in the local show in a couple years. Thanks for the positive feedback.

    Cedar elm progress pics

Crummy cell phone pic of another one that got repotted this year. I bought a Byron Myrick pot for it at the bonsai convention in Dallas a couple weeks ago. I'll try and get a pic of the pot later. The tree will have to wait a while for it's new home though.

    Is this an elm?

Looks like an elm. Maybe Ulmus pumila.

Couple more update pictures. One tree has lava rocks on it to try and keep the squirrels from digging in it again.

Bonsai and Art A continuation of What defines a Good Bonsai from the Also Rans....

I'm not sure why some of you here would lower yourselves to insult Bolero as you have. He started this thread to provoke discussion, gave his own input, gave thanks when others chimed in, and gave honest answers to questions when asked. There is no need to disparage his work or to insult his...

    THE BJORN MAPLE

Well you've definitely improved it, but the transition from bottom to top is awkward and obvious. It's clear that it was chopped, and a new leader wired up and over. The two branches growing from the same spot at the transition point create that ugly bulge that will only get worse with time...

    Cedar elm progress pics

Thanks coach. The twisted one is actually a Chinese elm. Looking at the date stamp on my first picture of it, seems like I've had it for 10 years now...crazy.

    Cedar elm progress pics

These three elms on the table got repotted this year. The single tree was sold along with 3 others to clear some space and cut down my watering time. I snapped a pic as he was loading it up, and I was kinda sad to see it go, but gotta keep moving forward with the "better" trees!

Ideally wouldn't you put a maple in a glazed pot? Thanks.

    Winged Elm air layer

I don't think the wings will ever grow back if you are growing it as a bonsai because you won't get enough unrestrained growth. I have used wire, clip and grow, and guy wires on mine.
