I second the wire tourniquet it will also improve success in layering black pine...mine took 2 years but can also give unequal rooting.
Honestly unless the part you are layering is particularly nice I probably wouldn't bother, time and effort is better spent in cultivating JBP seedlings.
I used Phyton 27 last year for the first time as we have a lot of issues here with maples. I must say with the exception of one tree that the maples this past year have grown like gangbusters and kept leaves well into fall...even had some fall color. Applied both by spray to larger/landscape...
Yes, my understanding is the American variety flowers and fruits only on the end of current seasons growth, whereas the Japanese variety flowers along the stems.
Yeah, saved me some money there:). It was nice but not $550 nice, with it being more of a shrub it's difficult to find one with a reasonably sized single trunk.
Thanks for the comments, I guess I'll give it a try this coming spring and see how it goes. I've done root approach and thread grafts on maple but have a feeling it won't be as easy...we'll see.
Of course I'll update this thread with the results.
Hi All,
I have a fairly nice shohin JBP that is in need of roots on one side as it was an air layer that didn't really root all the way around. Does anyone have any experience grafting seedling pine roots onto an established pine? Can you share any tips or tricks?
Here's the tree before cut...
Actually I'm just a reasonable person who is open to new data and will consider such data on it's own merits.
I am actually trying to lead you to a more open view of the argument. Even though I trust the data on global temperature rise as there is incontrovertible evidence for this. I don't...
