Nate is really such a great guide, and has truly incredible spots to collect in. I would recommend to anyone interested in bald cypress to support his business, especially the folks like me who don't have bald cypress growing in the environment around them.

    The 2024 Yamadori/Collecting Thread

Myself and a few other good folks from Canada made our way down to Louisiana for some swamp adventures. We were hosted by Nate Murray of The Boot Bonsai, from Franklinton Louisiana. Amazing trip, inspiring landscapes, and of course AWESOME BALD CYPRESS! Here is one I pulled that was giving me...

I was just down in Louisiana enjoying some bald cypress adventures, and it sounds like a couple of guys from down there will be bringing great bald cypress material to sell.

I got some 8 gauge copper wire at Home Depot that says it’s already annealed, but I’m having incredible difficulty bending it.

As mentioned above, electrical wire is annealed for construction, also called "soft draw" sometimes. You need to anneal it at your home for bonsai use. As a hobbyist I have made a bunch of annealed copper from wire I gather at work. I just sit by the fire in the yard and heat my coils, and...

    Mirai in HBO documentary

I really enjoyed the film. The Weyerhaeuser stories were great, Beth Moon's photographs are just amazing and really shocking seeing the attack on Mirai. Ryan's work always shows so well, and this documentary is just another example of how talented he is. I just love Ryan's work, and this made me...

Make a ceramics wishlist with links to potters/retailers, display tables and jitas, gift certificates for prebonsai or bonsai, just make sure the money is going to the real bonsai businesses.

    Cottoneaster yamadori I

I understand the whole Andolfo drawing your tree approach, I was more meaning specifically how you plan to grow the branches. The drawing only shows pads, no branching. Since this is a deciduous getting a nice leafless look takes a different approach than just setting pads. It will be a fun one...

Do you have a plan for how you want to grow the branching? Right now it seems to be all young sprouts as branches. Also curious if your sketch is showing the whole trunk on the right will become deadwood?

Pots you bought without a tree in mind

I went a little crazy over the long winter, and ordered a bunch of pots from Japan, mostly nanbans but a couple forest pots as well.

Pots you bought without a tree in mind

I have really realized I am drawn to both Shuho and Reiho's ceramics. They have such amazing textures, colours, and looks of age.
