Mateo’s back yard dumbassery

I also went to a local park where they have a short leaf variety of BC and took some cuttings. This will be my second year trying to root this sucker.

And now they will live under my bench until they either root or die, whichever comes first.

That looks good. The ones I tried got all chewed up by beavers.
No beavers here. This one is growing in a wood line behind an apartment complex where there is no drainage. Perfect urban swamp 😁

I’m seeing how much an Osage can take… it’s apparently a whole lot. This was an out of season chop, wire and repot… it sulked for about a week then shook it off and perked right back up. These are TOUGH trees.

It now lives under my deshojo along with another out of season repotted elm.

Trying my best not to harass the robin that built a nest in my pot of creeping sedum. It’s right on the rail tucked into my bamboo. Every time I come out to water plants or do anything on that end of the deck she flys off and yells at me.

After watching this video from @leatherback , I decided to try his techniques on one of my fagus grandiflora today.
I’m curious if an American beech responds the same way as a European beech does…. I guess we will find out soon enough. It just happened to be perfect timing too 😁

WHAT HAVE I STARTED?!?!😨😨😨

Looks like fun to me, though.

I have a sparrow and babies living above the back porch steps. Need to get some pics.

I love it when birds move in close. It’s a part of nature most people don’t get to see. Last year it was house wrens in the sedum pot.

This years maters have finally perked up after transplant. 3 heirloom purple cherries and 3 Mateo’s wild cherries.
IMG_2166.jpeg The nuclear pepper patch is starting to pick up speed too. Pequin peppers for hot vinegar and Carolina Reapers from Ed Currie because why not. Anyone want a Carolina Reaper plant? I have a couple extras.

I’ve been going through all my non Japanese maples and pruning back the spring growth to encourage back budding . Here are two that came from a fire prone area last year. View attachment 542320

And here’s the rubrum that @WavyGaby gave me this spring.View attachment 542324
What is meant by “back budding”? Is that just a new growth way down the bigger branches? Or even not so new growth way back down the bigger branch?

It is when bud sites further back from the growth tips start to grow. It is essential in shortening branches and ramification. On maples buds only come out from the nodes so by cutting the growth tips I may get foliage closer to the stump, which I want on these types of maples.

Not exactly in my back yard but going to my back yard eventually…. I did a little out of season collection today while I was at my buddy’s farm. American hornbeam and one little winged elm. I have an idea for a little clump planting with these.
