I am looking forward to pulling my collected beech out of it's winter sleep, but here in Quebec spring can be slow to arrive!

I will surely post a photo, it is a very different style. It is a true testament to the strength of the American beech. It was collected from a small mountain where it had it apex chopped year after year, yet it still pushes on.

Hey folks, I thought I would take a minute to update this thing. The first pictures show the results of bud pinching and terminal removal in early spring as outlined in an earlier post. The last pics are after leaf cutting and thinning, each leaf was reduced by 2/3's. As you can see in those closeups. bunches of very close nodes. I'm hoping that with more ramification, I'll get reduced leaves in time. Also, it's hard to tell in the pics, the sacrifice branch on the lower right side is almost 6 feet long, got close to 3 feet this season already. I also left the leaves unpruned on the lower left branch to help it along. Even though it looks a little ratty, the air and light can penetrate now. One day, as I shrink with age, I'll sit in the shade of this one. Thanks for allowing me to post.........SKDSCN1654.JPG DSCN1655.JPG DSCN1656.JPG DSCN1658.JPG DSCN1661.JPG DSCN1665.JPG

Seriously this is one of my favourite trees! I can say this is a real lesson for me on the benefits of patience and planning. It looks like it could be one of the giants growing in the woods next to my home, great work Steve!

Absolutely beautiful! I have a small beech that's quite a ways off from becoming anything more worthy of "stick-in-pot." One day, it may look good. Yours is stunning.

Hey Wilson, thank you so much Sir. I'm glad to be of service. This one has and continues to provide many lessons for me. One more season of growth after this one and it finally, Lord willing, will go into a bonsai pot. I can't wait!!

Oh, I plan on it.
In fact, as soon as I get more wood, it's going to be moved from the nursery can to a grow box so it can get some better girth and start working on a wide root flair.

God bless you my long distance bud!! His pricing is a tad out of line. Concerning pots, it's very rare for me to put something in a pot right away. I learned early on that you will lose lots of time if you pot too early, especially with something like that beech tree. Leave things in a larger container or the ground for awhile, let 'em gain some girth and heal over transition areas( trunk chops). It all really depends on the individual tree. If I had potted that one early on, it wouldn't be anywhere close to where it is now and it's been almost 3 decades even then. The sacrifice branch is necessary to get that bottom branch strengthened, we have to overcome apical dominance. Even after it's removed next year, I anticipate letting the branch grow out way past it's outline every 3-5 years to keep it strong. Thanks again Sir!

long distance bud!!

I am but a shitty long internode?

Lol...nerdy bonsai humor!

To me....there are a lot more "builder's" present here....
Than there are "Adair's", lol, not that he can't build...(i wouldn't call someone an armchair dude!)
But....conisuers....

But you never\rarely see a sacrifice branch.

I get mad excited to see a 6fter!

I'm gonna change "stick in a pot" to
"A rooted sacrifice branch"

Hey feller, What is that? That's not a tree...it's a part of a tree you're supposed to let run to make your "tree" look more like a tree.

You da man SK!
