New Ransomware "Crypto Lock" variant out last week. I had 5 customers get it Thursday.
Comes in an email saying you own money or behind on payment or Invoice.... Do Not Open or Preview , and it can launch from "Reading Pane" in MS Outlook. If you open it, it uses the encryption built in Windows, so your anti-virus software does not see any activity of it installing anything. Once encrypted you cannot get the data back. A few people have paid the ransom and got the data unlocked, but not many. And if it is unlocked, you will need to wipe the OS and do full install. Lot of time and money. Some people think they have nothing to loose, maybe no documents but it locks all those Pictures that you have stored on the PC.
Bottom line, never open any email that you do not know the sender, Nothing is Free!

Hope this Helps!

I read that often, and I always disagree with the statement "Never open any e-mail that you do not know the sender".
I disagree with it, as it would make the opposite seem true: "do open any e-mail that you know the sender"
The sender may be, or seem, familiar. There are many e-mails that seem to come from companies, and that may be companies you do business with - but were not actually sent by them. The correct phrase therefore should be:
"Do not open any e-mail that you did not expect. When in doubt, contact the sender and verify he really sent the e-mail".

(Of course you should also take all the other precautions - don't use the preview-pane, update your system, update your scanner, yada yada)
