A responded to a craigslist ad for removing free shrubs from a yard. Most were huge azaleas that would be a nightmare to dig. I spotted this boxwood and decided to dig it up. I root pruned and cut it back to let light in for back budding. I will most likely remove the bottom left branch that I've shown in the edited photo. Let me know what you see from a design standpoint. Thanks! 20160430_191105.jpg

Sorce, you like that branch in the design? I'm a little torn. Maybe it is more interesting with it included.

:pYou just dug it up.Back off and do the hort first. If it survives, and probably will, you are one lucky guy.I surmise that you will be dealing with a good deal of deadwood eventually. Now there will be the fashionista decisions.

I like that branch in the recovery!

This tree deserves many thoughts.
As many thoughts as can fit into the recovery time. A good healthy recovery time with a 1-2 year buffer.

This is a tree that can have an ok design in short time....
Or a wicked dope ass design in long time.
Like your grandkids finishing it time!

The pic 162245...shows the 3 trunks the best...with that branch in the back...so that would be my front.

Which is excellent because that honking big one above it is hiding too.

Additionally....
If everything but that low branch dies, you can still make a good tree with it!

I would love to hear an opinion on this from someone who knows boxwood.
@rockm @johng @garywood ?
But when it's said to reduce them equally top and bottom....I always assumed that meant trunks and branches on top....not just twigs and leaves....this has me a bit concerned about survival.....but I don't think you can safely do anything now.
Unless someone more knowledgable says reduce it more...

But that is the difficulty in the design too.
A lot of stuff that looks cool, but which may still have to come off. Hence many thoughts.

This is another one of those trees that I would take to @Walter Pall .
Because he has the most experience that I know of, in taking something that regular people think looks cool, and keeping and removing the proper stuff to make it shine. Plus, to understand boxwood, you have to have decades in the game.

Thanks for the great replies. Here are a few more pictures that I took. I can take more of some other angles as well. I think there are a few different options for a front. The triple trunk feature allows those options. I didn't reduce much from the root ball after I collected it. A decent amount of roots came loose from digging it up but most of the roots remain. I cut it back and left at least some foliage on the branches that still had some on them in order to promote back budding.
Sorce, great point about branches that I think may look cool but would be best removed to help the design. This one has great branches everywhere so I wanted to leave options. Definite concern now is survival. I'm not planning on touching this one for quite some time and making sure it recovers as best as possible. This is why I post on here. Great advice and different perspectives.

Man!

That sure is something!

I would try to keep it free of algae...
It just ruins the bark.

Dope.Dope.dope.

I had to check your location cuz if you were close, I'd want to come see this in person.....

Too far...

But Florida!
Damn!

All I can think about now is how frigging huge that thing would look with all new branching.

Sick.
