Last week I was looking around online at trees and decided to look on wigerts.
I ended up buying two trees that I'm very happy with.

First up is a collected laurel oak.
This one has about a 3.5" trunk and is around 30" tall right now. It has some nice taper, bark, and movement. Score!

And the foliage. I like the pink new growth.20160422_074211.jpg

Next tree is a little Brazilian raintree. Not a huge specimen, but I like it, I've been wanting one for awhile.20160421_184737.jpg

I'm super excited about the oak and can't wait to work on it. As for the raintree, it didn't enjoy being shipped as I know they are finicky so I'll let it grow and regain vigourusly for awhile.

Overall I really like both trees and felt they were a reasonable price, also Andrea over at wigerts is always super helpful with my orders, and helping me pick out a tree.

For the love of God don't barbecued your laurel oak!
:D

Nice trees!

For the BRT: I brought mine back from Miami as a hand-luggage, it was in November so on top of that it passed directly from 90 to 20 in 3 hours...
He lost basically all its leaves and I though it was dead but now it is budding all over the place:)
I'm sure yours will be fine in Albuquerque.

If you like BRT and you are going to Florida I can't recommend you enough to go the Dragon Tree Bonsai nursery in Palm City (approx 100 miles N of Miami, if you are in this part of FL) They have amazing BRT for incredibly cheap prices (mine was $25)

I'd love to go and check them out, but unfortunately I had to cancel my trip that's why I had to order them.

Yes I saw that after!
Oh well, next time you travel there then ;) (this nursery also has a retusa that broke its pot and totally incorporated the concrete wall it was put on. A ficus that takes the ROR was too seriously if you ask me :D)

Finally finished with the laurel oak. The BRT is also doing wonderfully and growing quick!

Let me know what you think of the styling on the oak. My personal thought is its to tall! I'll figure it out at some point.

Looking good, so far! The traditional ratio is 6:1, height of tree to width of base. So, for your tree, that would be 21 inches. If you've decided on the front, you should get rid of the other two thick branches at the chop.

The top scares me too....

I'd work on a midsummer plan to leave one.

Looking good....
Definitely not too tall IMO.

I have had good luck with "Texas Ebony" pithecellobium flexicaule I assume they are a cousin to "Rain Tree" tortum. I have even started some from seed but germination rate for me even after breaching the shell had been only 10% or so. This is one I potted way too early when I was a bit green. All of mine stay in a grow box until I am satisfied with the trunks.P1012022.jpg

The BRT has really taken off so I did a minor styling and took a good amount of cuttings which are all doing well over the last week.20160525_123858.jpg
Also the laurel oak needed it's first haircut and wire removal today.

UPDATE
The oak is doing quite well I just pruned it for the 3rd time and thinned about half the old foliage to let in some air and light, this thing can get very dense, very quickly.20160724_072539.jpg
I also went ahead and repotted the BRT into a large bonsai pot which will more then likely be it's home for a LONG time. I never let my tropicals get to big or put them in large containers mainly because I only have so much space in my greenhouse to store them come october.20160724_072629.jpg
I'm going to let the BRT run untouched each summer to see what I can do with the trunk in this pot. It grows like hell so I imagine I'll get some thickening, then I'll prune back hard in autumn when it's time to protect them.

This oak is faster growing then any other that I own or have even seen!20160822_073725.jpg 20160822_074050.jpg
I still love that pink new growth!20160822_074111.jpg
I treat this tree like my other oaks pruning wise. I let the branches extend as they please then let the growth harden off, then I will prune back to where I need.
I'll be defoliating the old foliage from earlier in the year so I can wire the tree again tomorrow and wednesday.

I've been thinking about this trees wintering.
Since it was collected and lived in southern Florida it's entire life I may treat this tree like a subtropical more like my olive. Leave it out until about Thanksgiving to get some cold and a few freezes to make it go dormant, then I'll move it to my greenhouse for the remainder of winter.
I know these are hardy to zone 6 but I just fear putting such an old tree that's never seen Temps in the twenties through that. It should do fine in the greenhouse for a couple months.
Your thoughts?

Looking good is my thought...
Did you leave all 3 trunk extensions at the chop?
I did for now, it's not causing taper issues right now so I'll need to work it out.
I was thinking of removing one and carving out the chop, not sure yet, it's actually healing pretty quickly. We should be able to see the structure after tomorrows work on it, I'll post an update and see what you guys think.
