What do you get when you spend an afternoon messing around with a pretty cool rock and a Japanese black pine seedling?? Well, I got dirt under my nails, chapped hands (it's cold!)...and most importantly, a mess in a nursery can that could be pretty cool in a few years (fingers crossed)IMG_1180.JPG IMG_1181.JPG IMG_1182.JPG IMG_1183.JPG IMG_1184.JPG .

Can you explain your method ? Why were the roots around the rock not wrapped completely with some sticking out the bottom? Need to grow more roots at the bottom before wrapping them? Just curious with your process. Nice stones too!

Rock or Rock(s)?...?.

Root over Rock(s) lends itself to more street cred. Just sayin'.

I'm only good with one rock at the moment, but I'll work on it.

The roots weren't quite as long as I had anticipated. So, my plan is to pull this one out of the pot next year and hopefully see more roots growing from the bottom. The goal over time is to reduce the number of heavy roots at the top to just a few and see them ramify a bit as they moves to the bottom...stay tuned.

It might make it, yes?
It'll survive but the planting is ruined. I'll take it apart this spring and evaluate both the pine and the stone for future use. The stone is likely salvageable but not as large/nice as it was. The pine will likely get thrown over the fence, or might I keep it to grow on as a conversation piece.

First things first. I like what you made. Really cool rock!! Nature whacked in hard. I hope you can keep your head up high. Gluing the rock together (after snow is gone or when you find the squirrel) is what I would do. It feels good to restore things and after a few (bonsai-) years you will have your conversation piece. Keep up the good work.
