@Nwaite I am tossing around the idea of perhaps going.to hike sugarloaf or Mt Abraham both above treeline sometime in the near future for possible spring collection prospects. Or perhaps if we can make it work out this summer we can shoot for fall-time. It'll be a lil cooler then as well. I know we can get right to the base lodge at the loaf but I'm not sure how close we can get to Mt Abraham or Mt Abram can't remember which one it is. It's near sugarloaf tho

Awesome! Thats what it's all about, getting stoked and being able to share our interest. I am glad you guys are game to head out in the mountains, and take time to adventure around. Too often we stay stuck in our domestic routine, and forget to open ourselves up to life's many gifts!
Cheers bro!

Hey I was just looking at the calendar. If you guys do go on the 9th I work till 10:30 :( but could meet up with ya after. It's only like hour or so ride for me.
If you decide on Saturday the 10th let me know and I'll find a sitter for the kids . My wife does massage therapy and books on the weekend but either way I'm still down. Just might be alittle behind ya it on Friday.

I'm in Massachusetts and very interested in collecting excursions. Especially been hoping to do a trip to maine to collect bog larch. Keep me in the loop. I'm a decent hiker with some collecting experience. Would be fun to go with others on a trip like this.

@Aaronkslater I am down for any destination that works with the group! Maine, NH, Mass, wherever. @Soldano666 and @Nwaite any preference?
No preference at all. I'm still down for sept9-10 at Mt Adams nh, I have some spots around me we can go look for larch. 2 spots I'm still trying to gain permission, one of them is owned by a independent law office and they don't return phone calls. And the other I have no idea who owns it. It's a bog with no houses anywhere near it. I've already hiked in and ran out of marking tape there's so many. And as far as sugarloaf mtn goes and most other ski resorts I think we can get permission easy enough because we're helping clear the trail edges where stuff has been repeatedly cut back year after year, make perfect candidates for what we want. It's just Too bad we don't have world class species in the mountians around here.

I only collect in the spring. I'm thinking on giving a fall collection a go. Get a hold of me and I can show you some. My only problem is my truck is in the shop. I hit a bear last week.

aww poor bear, hah glad you are ok. this is isint one of those stories where you hit a tree and made up a bear story is it? just playin. its getting to the point where I think I can dig anything up there carefully and bring it home about any time its not frozen.. nothin dies from up there... so far. I want a spruce, got a road to direct me to for those? you ever figure out if the "Red Pine" is a ponderosa? you must know what im referring? they literally give out "red pine" seedlings in the parade up there, they throw candy too, but still..

honesly though I would like to drive to the mountains some day and collect a tree.. all that state land up in maine... id probably never come back.

It's red or Norway pine. Only good for lumber.
The bear crawled off. I never saw it before I hit it. Bear season is coming up and we got idiots running them with dogs. It was running all out. They found a sow with 2 Cubs dead that died of a heart attack in someone's yard. The DNA figures it ran until it's heart attack. The cubs lived.
All I saw was bear hair in what was left of the grill and some snot down the side of the truck. I hit it on 608 just down from the corner of 489.

Just checking in about the 10th. We don't really have the best material found in the Northeast mountains, sure if we dig and hike far enough we might find something but chances are it's slim pickins. How's this for a plan. I know of a 30 year old privet hedge row in Wareham mass, that the owners want removed, we could possibly go dig instead of the white mountains hike. Just a thought, I'm more into going to get trees instead of hiking for hours looking for prospects and possibly still turn up empty handed. I've dug privet this time of year only to transplant, no root work no cutting back. that all can take place next spring. with 100% success rates. And as far as @Wilson goes we can get them dug and replanted and you could make a spring trip down to help repot everything and sneak some back to the motherland. Let me know what you guys think and too bad you have to work @Aaronkslater cause this shit is literally in your back yard. But everyone in mass posts free privets on craigslist when they re-landscape and want the giant over grown shrubs removed from the side of thier driveway. There will be plenty more for us .
