I need to try something like that...

You must, you must!

I planted a batch of seeds three years ago, and came out with nearly a hundred! I gave away many, but I still have about 3 dozens of them.

I found out that a little more germinated when stratified, but those I just planted in November and left outside with no protection at all germinated in about the same proportion.

Just a question, sorry if it's replicated or offtopic. To make multi-trunk, you just put two (three, four...) seedlings through the hole of a plate? With growing, they just fuse and layer like the single ones?

Thank you in advance!

That multi trunk tree in the colander is pretty sweet, Al. Do you ever have any issues concerning compatibility of seedlings concerning bark or leaf size or color. I've wanted to do something like this but I'm concerned that the leaves or bark on one trunk might be obviously different.

Use cuttings from one tree...just a thought...
I'd rather use seedlings too.

Yes they do.

I don't worry about it. These were from the same batch of seed so I suspect they came from at least one tree, maybe two who knows. These just isn't that much variation between average tridents to be of concern, at least for me. I graft branches by approach from other tree bought years apart and not even from the same person and have never seen any thing that would tell me it was from a different tree except for my crappy branch unions.
I've thought of that but trident cuttings are hit and miss for me.
Need to do more than four or five. Need four or five hundred and then you will wish your success wasn't so good.

The whole thing. Thats just a 1/2 inch hole, just matchstick size trees.

What do you think Smoke? Got the balls for this? LOL

The second year I cut back two trunks to allow the other three more girth and height. I didn't want them all the same size. So I guess I had only two fifths balls?

The following year one can see the scar from the chop. One can also see the difference in trunk size as opposed to the others.

Is anything needed to be done to get roots on the left? Or should these just happen with a bit more time?

I am sure you know I was joking, and I suspect everything is fully intact! ;)
I grew a bunch from seed this year too and plan a few projects like this.
