Winged Elm may be in distress?

My winged elm tree is starting to get yellowing leaves. I know during seasonal changes elms leaves will yellow, but I live in central Florida. It seems to be to early for this. Could my tree be dying? It has been watered regularly, same location and fertilized over a week ago with Peters fertlizer.
Thanks all you nuts out there who have any advice.

Are there strong buds at the base of them?

Winged elm in Houston don't get fall colors until December.

Fall color change begins on the outer leaves and works it way inward. Your tree seems to be doing the opposite (losing the inner leaves), which to me says it has been stressed. Your plant doesn't look bad, though, and elms are notoriously strong. I think it will be alright.

Welcome to Fall, my friend
But I live in Florida, could this happen so early? Not one single cool day since last winter. I realize fall is coming, I just thought not for us southerners. Hopefully, season change is the reason. I will check out if any buds appear.

Winged elms can be sensitive to conditions that are not quite perfect this time of year. Yours may be pot-bound which could lead to difficulty in watering properly. Plus summer heat can have an effect. Based on how the tree looks, I don't see anything that out of the ordinary for a winged elm. I would check the root zone and repot next year if needed.

Thanks, I feel better. I usually don't kill my trees.

Mine are turning a bit yellow already too... Noticed it earlier this week, a fade of color to a lighter green almost yellow... A few older leaves are turning all the way yellow.

One of mine is dropping leaves, yours has more than mine. I'm not too worried, I just hope it doesn't push new growth. Hopefully yours doesn't try to but depending on where you live in Florida it might be fine if it does. Once the leaves fall off, use the buds to gauge the health of the plant.

Perhaps it's a difference in culture or variety. I have Winged and/or Cedar elms. They have no yellow leaves today and I don't expect many before November or December in my climate. Nor are any of the native elms in the ground turning. They'll certainly turn earlier in Virginia, but if I were along the Gulf Coat and had elms turning in mid-September I'd question my culture of these trees - there is still a full two months of growing season left at that time. If my bonsai were turning a full two months earlier than trees on my street I'd guess there's an issue. I'd for sure repot into good quality soil this repotting season.

Mine are just starting to turn yellow. Got just one or two yellow leaves now. Took this pic last week. I wouldn't worry, these are just about the toughest trees you can find. I'm sure yours will be just fine. This one went yellow a bit earlier last year from me missing a few days of watering in late summer, but came back this spring. I made quite a few cuts this spring and it still needs some more years of ramification and a repot next year, but I like the trunk movement. IMG_2345.JPG

I've seen some of these at my parent's place in North Texas with semi-green leaves still holding on in February!

Mine are turning here in Va., but they have some persistent green leaves well into November. Those stubborn leaves can hang on past December until they get freeze dried by the winter cold.
