What the hell are you feeding that thing...
Elephants; turnabout's fair play ;)

Seriously though, they grow very vigorously in this climate. One thing I noticed is that they will take a lot more water than you might think. They tolerate drought well, but grow like mad when I water them the same as my other trees. My two big ones went from 5# nursery pots to bonsai pots this year and didn't skip a beat . . .

Thanks for the info Colin. I've been watering mine once a week. I think I should up their water intake

Don't water too much tho...
Don't water on a calendar schedule, best to let it dry out, then water when needed.
They only grow roots when good and dry.
You can keep them well watered, but the roots won't grow much.
I over watered mine in year 1.
Since I've been more careful, and allowing it to dry, it's grown strongly.
I feed it with a heavy dose of 20-20-20 every 2nd or 3rd watering.
They like fert.
Wish I could leave mine out year round, I like what you're doing with this @ColinFraser, keep up the great work.

You can water like crazy when they're outside in active growth. :)

Anyone know where can I get a thick raw portulacaria like that? I've looked everywhere with no luck. Any online sellers?

Update! This will likely be my final update to this thread since I sold the tree today at the Huntington Gardens Bonsai-a-Thon event. I was a bit sad to see it go actually, but I got enough for it to buy 7 new pots, including 4 from Jim Barrett and 2 from Dick Ryerson, and still have enough left for lunch ;)

Here's a final picture of it at the table and a shot with the new owner:

I just remembered that I still have its twin from the first photo; I guess it's time to start a thread for that one :)

I was surprised that Frank Yee's cork bark one with the double trunk didn't sell first thing. When I left at noon on Saturday, it was still there. I came very close to dropping the $150 for it, for no other reason than putting it up for auction nationally for people who have been looking for one of his "trees". I know it would have gone for more than $150.

He sold a fat single trunk one that was at least 40 years old for $350 to another vendor during setup on Friday. I also saw a customer walking away with a good-sized triple trunk, so he definitely moved a few . . .

Out of curiosity how much did you let it go for?
