I'm pretty sure they'll be at the Chicago show in August. Bit of a trek for you but it's the best closest big show for you. Also, BC Bonsai has a growing ground about 25 miles south of Rockford. If you want bigger trees at a great price you can't beat them. Come to think of it, both BC and Mehans are typically vendors at the Chicago show.

Thanks for the info. Not sure I can get my husband to drive that far to see trees, lol, but there's lots to do in Chicago. Probably the closest a big show will ever be by me, unless there is one in St Louis.

I got a kingsville boxwood from them at the Nat Arb show a few months back.
I wish I didn't have my wife with me, so I could've spent more!
Nice people. Good stuff to choose from.

I received my order today. I got a willow leaf ficus, that was $10, that is WAY bigger than I thought it would be. I started a thread on it in tropical. I also got a teeny mame pink mountain serissa (crossing my fingers). The prices were great, shipping was fast, and everything arrived in great shape. My only disappointment was they were out of bougainvillea. AWESOME vendor. Thanks for the feedback.

Inquired by e-mail about any bouganvillea's available, and Martha answered promptly. She's adding one to my order, so I don't have to go on the website and create another order, and pay extra shipping. Also, answered some questions I had, and was super nice. Great place.

My nursery buys most of our bonsai from them, a lot of smaller specimens in bonsai pots but we get a few larger bonsai from them also. We get a ton of our bonsai starters from them. They have a great selection, the male owner (forget his name) fills his van up and drives down to Richmond and we hand pick every plant, great guy!

I bought a small Trident in a 6 inch pot from my store (from Meehan's) this spring, it was about 10 inches tall this April. I've repotted twice this season already and it's at least 8 feet tall now! Very happy with it.

My sister moved to Frederick Maryland early this year and I went to visit her and was going to stop by their nursery, unfortunately they closed at 3pm and I missed out... Super bummed but I'll eventually make it up there.

My first post here - finally a discussion in which I make a contribution. I can definitely corroborate the prevailing opinion here - Meehan's is a jewel - they are great folks. They've got an incredible selection of stock and finished trees.

Purchased this stock trident maple from Martha a couple weeks ago. Beautiful tree in a 20" (interior diameter) trainer pot - the trunk is over 6" wide with a root spread nearly twice that.

Definitely caught the bug bad this year. Now all I have to do is keep everyone healthy through winter. Can't wait for spring!

@Das Dude
That's a great tree!
I'm heading over there next weekend for the first time. Looking for something like that maybe a little smaller even....
I know it's been a few months, but were there more trees like that?
And if you don't mind me asking, about how much did that beast run you?

the only local nursery I go to, they are super friendly and always there to help. it takes me about an hour to get there but it's worth the drive.
price wise they cannot be beat, and the quality of their trees cannot be matched!

The anxiety is building....I think I want a nice trident trunk....but we'll see what's there.

If you're in Md. or the DMV, ya oughtta talk to Matt Ouwinga about tridents...He's got tons of tridents large and small. He's developing most of his stock at this point, but it all beats Meehans. I've been up to his place in Upper Marlboro (or thereabouts). Big plans and a lot of seedling and a bit larger Japanese-seed grown stock.

Matt's a regular at bonsai shows selling imported Japanese pots. He has a growing sideline business selling seedlings and stock trees. If you're on Facebook, look for him on the "bonsai auctions" feed and his own page.

He's been working hard at his Maryland home to establish in-ground stock, particularly Japanese and Trident maples that he grows from imported seed. He's also got some other stuff, like plum, black pine, etc. that are spectacular.
