:) You have some good friends there Maarten. You should never move from where you are now!

Very nic tree. Are you considering a reduction in the overall size of the tree?

I know man, that seems to be the way all these bonsai crazies roll. You better get your ass over to NZ too, bet ya will love it!

I did consider it, yes. I think it will come with the front change. When will you be getting over to check all this stuff out?

Ps there's some crowding going on over here and I heard you have a lot of space :p

You want to keep your interior branches growing to the point that you can replace branches once they get out of proportion. Colin Lewis has a good section on this in his book The Art of Bonsai Design.

Gonna fetch myself a copy! To let these shoots grow they need light, so I need to thin a bit, right? Will pinching back shoots do or do I cut back to the inner shoots right away? Thanks for answering all these questions Judy, it's very educative!

What you do depends on where you are in the development phase. Are you nearing show time for this tree, or is it post show rebuilding phase? You work to get the tree to it's absolute pinnacle, or to a very good place, then show it if you're looking to do that. Then is the time to rest and rebuild the tree.

Very many thanks Judy! I'll take this tree to the new years' presentation at Deshima Bonsai and work out some goals for it. I'll let y'all know how it progresses!

Finally the photo's of the new years' bonsai thing at Teunis Jan Klein's Deshima Bonsai have been posted online! It was the first show in which I showed stuff (open podium ftw!), so I was really excited and forgot to take pics myself...
Had to wait a week but the photos are worth it!
This is the hornbeam with a ribes rubrum on agate for accent. Much better now! DSC1466.jpg
The guy wire between the trunks is removed and the small trunk will be pulled a little more to the left. The apexes will have to get a little smaller, but I ran out of time for the show, so this spring through the mower it goes again! The small trunks are going to be sacrificed when thickened up, so no multitrunk I think.
Opinions yes please!

I also got a few tips on the elm, with the most important one being that nebari doesn't always determines front. It will be getting a bit smaller next growing season. I hope the airy feel remains.

Wow long time ago!

I made some progressions on my trees lately and hope you're as excited about them as I am! Here's my thuja, posted before in the Tree Thread. Gave it a full wiring yesterday eve, it's looking so much better instantly. It used to be one of those garden cones not 5 years ago. Can't wait for it to fill out and take the next step!

I like this one. I will look really good once it fills in to make the pads.

I'd drop the drop branch. Perhaps this is your intention.
It bothered me in search of reason for the opposing straight jins and newer Squiggly branching.

Anyway I think those 3 kind, going through that one loop makes good design sense. A special pot will finalize the "steer away" from traditional, something that will compliment the "straight through the loop.

Love it.

Missed ya!

You're not the first to say that about the drop branch. It's staying on for now but I might snip it off altogether later! Will defo keep you posted!
The pot's gonna be epic if all works out, I'll sketch a pic later!

Cheers bro, missed ya too!

The ugly duckling spruce from the first page. There's a sweet Dragonfly Bonsaipots pot waiting 😎

And an Abies koreana, from a christmas tree. They backbud really well so I'm building the branching from scratch again. IMG_20210329_141757.jpg
It should look nice in a few years, but exhibition might not happen until 2028. That rootball is ginormous, there's at least 2 more repots necessary to get it right.
