I by happen chance have come across this wondering "thing", and a wonderfull thing it is. Only thing is, is I'm not sure what it is. Anyone know or care to guess? It rather large too, about 8" across at the base.

If the leave beneath it are any indication, I'd guess some sort of willow.

it's underneath two larger tree's so wouldn't go by that but it could be a willow.
Yes, the leaves under the tree look like willow leaves, young bark detto.

hmm looks viney to me, im going to guess grape.
Checking Virginia tech tree ID, you have got much more willow species on your side of the pond... If it grew here I would say alba, nigra or maybe babylonica. The rest is "exotic" here.

Hmmmm guess spring shall tell it's tell, though it's a nice find as it should be ez to collect too

I agree, what can be found here... But you have many non native species sold and grown for landscapes... it's just a weeping willow.
