I second the wire tourniquet it will also improve success in layering black pine...mine took 2 years but can also give unequal rooting.
Honestly unless the part you are layering is particularly nice I probably wouldn't bother, time and effort is better spent in cultivating JBP seedlings.
I used Phyton 27 last year for the first time as we have a lot of issues here with maples. I must say with the exception of one tree that the maples this past year have grown like gangbusters and kept leaves well into fall...even had some fall color. Applied both by spray to larger/landscape...
Yes, my understanding is the American variety flowers and fruits only on the end of current seasons growth, whereas the Japanese variety flowers along the stems.
Yeah, saved me some money there:). It was nice but not $550 nice, with it being more of a shrub it's difficult to find one with a reasonably sized single trunk.
Thanks for the comments, I guess I'll give it a try this coming spring and see how it goes. I've done root approach and thread grafts on maple but have a feeling it won't be as easy...we'll see.
Of course I'll update this thread with the results.
Hi All,
I have a fairly nice shohin JBP that is in need of roots on one side as it was an air layer that didn't really root all the way around. Does anyone have any experience grafting seedling pine roots onto an established pine? Can you share any tips or tricks?
Here's the tree before cut...
Actually I'm just a reasonable person who is open to new data and will consider such data on it's own merits.
I am actually trying to lead you to a more open view of the argument. Even though I trust the data on global temperature rise as there is incontrovertible evidence for this. I don't...
Still didn't read it then huh? Well you should stop reading your own writings then.
As I said she is an anthropogenic global warming skeptic, in other words she doesn't think human activity is causing the warming and that the warming isn't/won't be as bad as some of the doomsday predictions...
Your bias is showing, did you read the article or just get triggered by "Berkeley"?
Actually the author is Dr Judith Curry and although she is a bit of a climate change skeptic she does agree with the Berkeley data and methodology...are you really so closed minded?
I'll try and catch up later...
Typically the head breaks off and hopefully flies across the room...and not into someones face.
Or the shaft will bend and unbalance the dremel at which point you throw the damn thing down as it's shaking too much to turn it off and turn off the power...hint use a foot pedal power switch.
Thats so cute...you think you're the first one to notice. For a more rigorous evaluation and critique of the historical data methodology you might want to check here:

Let me know if you have any questions.
The data is measured data since 1750. A model was made taking into account solar peaks, volcanic emissions etc and found to match the data until 1950. The rise in temperature since 1950 could then only be modeled by adding in the effects of CO2.
This is exactly how the Scientific method...
I didn't call for anything to be closed, I was actually a little disappointed...
I mean the discussion is kind of pointless. When I showed some data from NASA detailing the increase in temperature above the modeled normal cyclic range you disregard that data based on nothing but...
In the same 10 month time frame? Again what else could Obama do with the obstructionist congress he had.
What does this have to do with anything in this thread? We are talking about the current Republican congress.
Not saying I'm for or against it, just be prepared for the inevitable...
