    Azalea...nutrient deficient...?

Interesting. It has been in this mix since only this spring....few months. My Ph of the water I use is 6.5 So the silution would be to replant yearly...? I can't afford Kanuma for all my azaleas. I have to make a sacrifice...and the mix of bonsai soil (or pumice) and ericacious soil is my best...

    Azalea...nutrient deficient...?

Apologies, I should've added I have a filter on my main water line...mainly for chlorides. I do check and adjust the Ph with hydrochloric acid...in a water tank which I water from. Yes it seemed like an iron uptake problem to me to....which is strange considering it is in ericacious soil, and it...

    Copper beech...green leaves.

Agreed. This is what I told myself is happening. That's why I mentioned its autumn now. The one in the pot was outside in full sun all summer....until I moved it into the frame under a shade cover 2 weeks ago. The one in the ground got sun until 3 o'clock every day. They both greened up the...

    Copper beech...green leaves.

I find this fascinating. Its the start of autumn now. My two Copper beeches both had their red leaves all summer, but today I saw their leaves are green....for the most part. Do they naturally do that? This is the first year I have noticed that. Now i'm on the wonder if I just did not pay...

    The myth of 10:10:10 fertilizer.

A good example of a 3:1:2 ratio fertilizer I used to love, was Dyna gro Foliage pro 9:3:6.....but I can't find that anymore.

    The myth of 10:10:10 fertilizer.

Maybe not that applicable to bonsai....but still worth knowing I think. Yeah we flush regularly, but seems to me it don't give the trees what they really need. I first heard of the 3:1:2 ratio that plants takes up nutrients, some 10 years ago....and still choose my fertilizer as close to that I...

    Where is the graft...?

Thanks all. Yeah I had the 2 graft thing in the back of the mind to. I would like to think he did that to get a better looking tree. My problem now is I can't really layer it so it can be on its own roots. I'll still layer it at the appropriate place though...to shorten the trunk. At least the...

    Where is the graft...?

I did remove a dry stump from here My thinking is this is the graft...but then it has a branch below that, which don't make sense to me. Also...what's the reason behind the white trunk that suddenly stops...lower down?

    Where is the graft...?

I recently bought this Acer mikawa. I'm a bit confused as to where it was grafted. The plan is to layer it to shorten the trunk some...but I need to be sure where the graft is first.

    Mikawa Yatsubusa advice

Thanks...I understand. I take it the purpose of removing the lower leaves is to encourage back budding in those areas...?

Seedling mikawa yatsubusa in stock again at mr maple!

Yeah being the slooww growers that they are...it makes sense to me they'll be slow to form roots also.

Seedling mikawa yatsubusa in stock again at mr maple!

I just saw a beautiful Mikawa (1" trunk with good primaries) for $40, but its grafted. It can easily be air layered though. Does anybody know how well the Mikawa layers?

More pesky stuff on my tridents!

Yeah its either a spesie of lichen, or remnants of lichen that has been killed. The lichen i'm used to isn't that smooth...but it has that appearance after a while when I sprayed vinegar on it.

    Azalea seeds received from Glaucus.

Ah...notice the 6th photo. I rubbed the sphagnum through a kitchen sift...to get a thinner layer. I managed to get a layer of about ±2 mm...which is great as it will make it so much easier to lift with the toothpick. Have to say it was a hassle rubbing through that sift...especially to do bigger...

    Azalea seeds received from Glaucus.

Some photos of the germinated seeds (first post above). Some germinated better than others...as can be seen. Best of all by far is Kami no Yamakirin. And 1 of Karenko is up....which i'm absolutely stoked about. Remember, I sowed the seed before I put the sphagnum down. Its tiny...but it is...

    Chinzan top not leafing out...

Its the curse of a 2D photo. Its looks like its growing down...but its actually growing sideways....horizontal. I'm directing it to cover the back. That's the thing with the apex also. When viewed from the side, the tree leans at an angle...and the apex are growing towards the centre of the...

    My old rose..

Its about 30yrs old. I dug it up 8yrs ago and had to cut off some real think side trunks. Currently its about 300mm high and the trunk diameter is 160mm (at the thickest side). What is interesting about it, is I never sealed the wood when I removed the excess growth. It started rotting...

For sure, I agree...the wrong terminology was used here. This is not a wood hardener. It is a wood preserver.
