    shimpaku styling

The first thing you need to do with the big guy is clean it up. Get rid of any dead or weak foliage, anything growing straight downward. Then you'll have a much better opportunity to look INTO the tree to see if a style pops out at you. If not, put it back on the bench and wait until it does. At...

Initial styling of a procumbens juniper

Thank you for the detailed reply. I agree that the foliage mass is too large for the trunk at this point. Just not sure where to take it stylistically from here.

Initial styling of a procumbens juniper

Spring update on this procumbens. Just letting it fill in this season, hoping for some back budding so I can continue to tighten it up. Still unsure about the bottom right branch, but leaving it for the time being

Without a doubt it did! I'll update when it flowers. :)

Adam Lavigne came to the club yesterday and styled this bougie...

...and I won the raffle! How about that? Stoked to have this new tree on my bench. Here's a few pics, one outside, one inside, and one of my ugly mug with the tree just before I headed home. Looking forward to seeing it pop new leaves!

Here's a little update on this juniper. This is after its second wiring done this past weekend. Coming along, methinks!

    4th Of July Shimpaku

No, I worked from the bottom up.

    4th Of July Shimpaku

I thought there might be enough separation between the two bottom branches to work as an informal upright. As I got closer to the finish, I realized that wasn't the case. And unfortunately jinned a branch that could have been useful down the line. Live and learn.

    4th Of July Shimpaku

Here's a little shimpaku I styled over the long weekend. It had minimal branching to begin with and a bar branch right in the middle. The apex is also too far away from the main branches. I have gotten a couple of opinions to turn this into a literati tree over the next couple of years. Jin a...

Initial styling of a procumbens juniper

I think with a little bit of wire, I can space everything out.

Initial styling of a procumbens juniper

So, I said I was going to just let this grow. I was wrong. I've been looking at it for awhile and that bottom right branch had to be dealt with.

Mame Shimpaku juniper - first styling

Yep. Not many back branches at all. And you're right. The right branch is wired around from the back.

Mame Shimpaku juniper - first styling

Bought this Shimpaku last year for about $15 and decided to try my hand at styling it. I didn't have a great pic of what it looked like before, so I just circled it in red below. Comments and criticism welcome!

    Shimpaku Juniper - styling thoughts?

Picked this tree up for $60 on a Facebook auction. Trunk is a bit straight for my liking but I thought it was a good deal and something I could work on. Now, the problem is I have a TERRIBLE time looking at raw stock like this and seeing a potential bonsai inside. Any ideas from you folks?

Initial styling of a procumbens juniper

Here's an update on this sucker after about 7 months of growing. Filling in nicely, I think. Haven't done anything to it except feed and water since I wired it. Going to let it grow this season and reassess in the fall regarding design. If anyone has any good ideas, throw them at me!

It is aluminum, yes. It holds well enough for now. Wanted to just put basic structure on it.

Initial styling of a procumbens juniper

So here's a tree I got from Jason Schley at Schley's Bonsai in Deland, FL. I'm a beginner, have only been doing bonsai for about four months now. Bonsai isn't so popular in Mississipi but I do live close to a local enthusiast and he has helped me tremendously. This is my first all out style on...
