    Emerging needle color?

I ...think.... the color is fine. (?) I just pulled the yellow tipped .....OLD.... (3 year or so) needles that were sticking out around the bottom of those clusters. The tree with no candles....

    Looking for a shade item.

This year I got some commercial mix from Maruyama Bonsai in Sacramento. It.....seems... ??.... to be pretty resistant to water retention. VERY FAST DRAINING.... but is it TOO fast? The mix is supposedly akadama, pumice, and lava. And I have used it before with no concerns. THIS YEAR'S dries...

    JBP...uppot or not?

I have a quandary. This is a JBP bunjin that I've had for 12 years or so. It was a volunteer from a large one in the yard in my last house. In this non-bonsai pot, it was pretty nice green. Not liking the pot much, I put it in this one ...THINKING.... that more bottom venting would be...

    What is this?

...Looks.... juniper-ish. But never have found out for sure. That color is pretty accurate. Bluish grey. ?????

    For an oak repot...

Would it be better to use a wider, shallower pot or a deeper but slightly smaller pot for repot? I am certain it is rootbound as this was the pot I have had it in for a year and a chopstick won't even start into the soil. I was a bit leery of this mica pot as I am familiar with the profusion of...

    A few JBP questions.

These have been sitting undisturbed in pond baskets for 2 years. 1. Candles on candles ? Or are they cones. AND.... should they stay? 2. How about these things? Keep or dump? 3. Multiple candles. Keep or thin out? Pines are not my thing. ;)

    How early for Neem Oil?

Neem fixed this juniper last year. https://www.bonsainut.com/threads/after-the-death-of-the-spider-mites.61876/#post-1073372 Now I'm thinking....prevention.... Is Neem preventative as well as mite killer? If so, how soon to apply?

Too BUSHY..... maybe also too... LEAN-ey

I'm looking at this juniper that started out about 25 years ago as a staked procumbens on the patio. At around that time, I saw a better (?) plan and reduced the mound of staked plant to far less of a tree. It gave me fits as the height was a wind catcher. Various pots later, I put it in that...

    Repotting procedure for procumbens

I'm seeing conflicting advice on root pruning junipers for repot. Seems more are advising chopping bottom rather than pie cuts into root mass. ?????? This one has pretty dense rootball.

    Repot indicator?

I've read many opinions on when or whether to repot. By time or by soil surface rise? Both make sense but to me the interval seems easiest to remember and do. My main post question is for trees with the heftier (or thicker) roots. Like olives or boxwood for 2 examples. Spaghetti roots. It...

Do spent leaves still photosynthesize ?

This is a Robur oak. I am calling the leaves "spent" as opposed to "dead." I read conflicting advice as what to do with them. Some say leave them on and wait for new ones to push them off. Also some say to remove them. Are they still "working" and providing good things for the tree or not...

Will hard pruning a quince make ramification down lower?

Shoot, I put the whole question in the title. Will it?

    Conflicting hard prune info.

The BSSF (Bonsai Society San Francisco) handout chart shows NOW as time to hard prune juniper. That is the ONLY place I see that reco. ALL the google searches say spring. Which would be right for Zone 9? That pic SAYS it's a ...small... pic. ????

Oxygen to the roots source. Soil surface or drain hole?

Just wondering. Don't think I've seen this discussed here. Or I missed it. I would....assume.... the O2 from the soil surface would be much more than what comes from the drain hole. Thinking being that the water would carry it through the root area. But I'm not sure.

    QUINCE..... the sources SAY

I have a chinese quince that I would like to repot. The sources that I read say to do it in Nov/Dec but looks like they also say to do it when it is BARE. Which mine is not. Some branches are full of leaves. Others more sparse. Sooo... should I do the dirty deed now or wait for the leaves to be...

Should literati JBP candles be cut shorter?

Since my summer prune, my JBP bunjin is throwing VERY vigorous new buds (candles) Should these be cut shorter than a JBP "normal" decandling?

JBP Bunjin desperation. (reading patience required)

Okay, I took some pictures. Then messed with them to "try" to get some order. Hopefully not too complicated. 🤔 Anyhow, this tree NEEDS reducing. Maybe everywhere. Almost positive that the sacrifice leader in IMG 2 has to go. It's done what I wanted. I've kept it as it was a volunteer at...

    Chopstick to check moisture.

I'm thinking that if it is really HARD to get it in, it's a good indicator of needing a repot.

AFTER the death of the spider mites...

Does the gray foliage return to green? Or do you have to cut it off and hope new growth replaces it? While on the subject, does neem oil have any beneficial effect on the juniper itself or just as a miticide? 🤔

    I'd like to...move...this little juniper.

Pom-pom or not, I kinda like this little thing. (Itowigawa?) I'd like to ...move... it into the pot in the 2nd pic. Not a true ...repot... Other than some squooshing into the pot and maybe some rearranging since the dimensions are different, I don't think I'd have to do any root work. That...

    Juniper various browning. ??

I made a halfass tanuki with this thing about 6-7 years ago. No repot since then. Threaded juniper limbs in various holes and grooves in the deadwood piece. It has started to brown various shoots and I'd like to know why. None of the other junis are doing this. I can pull the dead ones out and...

    Now it's the CRABAPPLE !!

More problems. What now with this crabapple? 🤪 Just noticed the brown leaves and droops. It always needs water to keep the drooping away, but now ...brown, too. ????? I tellya. Almost back to stamp collecting.

    What's wrong with this quince?

I don't seem to be able to keep it happy. If it gets the least bit thirsty, the ends ALL droop. So I water and they perk right up. For a day..... I just read that fall is a good time to repot so I'm considering that 9/1 might be fall. It sure needs SOMETHING! The leaves are now beginning...

JBP.... When can, should, would it be time to prune back this mop?

It seems happy....BUT.... jeez! It is TOO BIG AND FULL !! Can I clip back to some needles on those sticks? Haven't examined in DETAIL but quick view shows no buds. Alternative could be affixing a pole to that pond basket and making it into a cobweb mop.
