Is this pot too big for the tree?

The size of the pot will seem much more appropriate when the tree is in leaf, or has better developed ramification. Your virtual above works well if you move the tree to the right of the pot.

    Watering at bonsai shows?

For multiday shows I (and most people I know) take the trees off the stands, put them on a waterproof surface (e.g. plastic bag), and water carefully with a pressurised sprayer.

    San Francisco bonsai?

The place most likely to be of interest is Corin's nursery (Nottingham) - https://www.bonsai.co.uk/ . Have a look at the UKBA events calendar https://www.ukbonsaiassoc.org/event-calendar.html to see if there are any shows on while you are here, though over the summer they are mainly small local...

    San Francisco bonsai?

I’m going to be in San Francisco for a couple of days in November (work). I was wondering if there was anything bonsai-related I should check out. I already know about the bonsai garden at Lake Merritt, so that is on the list. I won’t have time to visit any nurseries/clubs etc, but are there...

Timing of layering a spruce? for new nebari

Spruces have strong root growth in late summer / early autumn. I haven’t layered one but I’d probably want to start the process a bit earlier in the year.

    English Hawthorn / Common Hawthorn

This specimen looks like it has loads of potential. I would definitely consider collecting it. If this is Craetagus monogyna, that is an absolutely superb species for bonsai - one of the best deciduous species available in Europe. For some inspiration and information on collecting, maintenance...

    UK, New-ish Bonsai

Correct. You can buy empty teabags (with a drawstring closure) on ebay - don't go emptying the tea out of your PG Tips.

    UK, New-ish Bonsai

It's the wrong time of year for repotting larch. They'll arrive in small pots. Leave them in those until next spring. Just water and give them some occasional fertiliser. You will know when it's time to pot them up because the buds will take on a 'golden' colour - probably around February...
