    Giant Sequoia advice

I truly want as many people trying sequoias as possible, there is very little info on growing them as bonsai and much of what I have learned is from trial and error. Getting other people's do's and don't would push the knowledge of the spiecies forward a good deal. I personally know what they...

I haven't found them as easy as you describe, best of luck.

    Giant Sequoia advice

Sequoias are extremely difficult in Bonsai culture at best, that's why we don't see very many of them. I would never advocate keeping one outside in a northern zone, it's not that they can't take the cold, but the combination of winter climate and exposed foliage mass is what does them in...

    Giant Sequoia advice

No not inside, but it does need protection from outside winter conditions. If you have an unheated garage that would be best. With these it’s not the cold that gets them, but the cold and wind, that will desiccate them.

    Water how often?

I pile the snow on them if we have any, this will slowly water them over time. If there is no snow, I check to see if the surface is dry, then I water. I don't need to do it more than every 2-3 weeks.

Wife gets a swimming pool, I get the wisteria

Yeah, those nitrogen fixing nodules scared the crap out of me the first time I repotted my wisteria, I thought it was some sort of disease at first that was going to kill my tree.

    Not bad for $50!!!

I think the key is Mike, to not shut the door on any possible avenues for knowledge, the tricky part is sorting out good info from bad. I was self taught the first 7-8 years then I joined our club, that just opened a whole new world of knowledge and people, like the Vance's, Jack Wikle, Cyril...

Wife gets a swimming pool, I get the wisteria

Mine gets repotted every other year, the roots grow like mad, I fertilize heavily spring thru fall with a variety of organic and water soluble fert, full sun, trey of water, but I only get it to flower every other year. When it does flower, it explodes. I'm planning on reducing the Flower...

Wife gets a swimming pool, I get the wisteria

Nice development Scott, what is your ultimate plan for the braided upper trunk? I would say don't try and shoehorn this tree into an idealistic bonsai, but rather train it instead for the best display for when it's flowering. For 11 months out of the year wisteria are rather unsightly, but man...

    Not bad for $50!!!

Will the methods work, of course, will they work well, yes. Is there better info out there, certainly? I've only turned to the internet and social media for Bonsai info the last 4-5 years, but I've learned so much more in that time. The books are a great source of info, but can certainly...

    Not bad for $50!!!

Nice little score, I think I have most of these. Keep in mind much of the info in these books are outdated and newer methods/techniques have been developed as our understanding of bonsai has evolved. They are great for inspiration though.

Is Bonsai Mirai Live Worth $300/year?

I have the tier 2 and may go up to tier 3, wish he would do random free Q&A similar to the live stream, that certainly got me to bite. Each live streams is jammed with so much information that I don't think the tier 1 is worth it, I find myself going into the archives weekly. In my opinion...

I've had the DVDs for 6 years or so, I'd assume the videos are pushing 8-10 years ago now. I think the question of how the trees from the DVDs have progressed has come up a couple years ago and that Boon no longer has them, but confirmation would be great.

Off hand, no, but I might be able to pop the DVD in and take a picture tomorrow. I'll have dig it up.

Boon uses one in his Japanese maple DVD where he turns a piece of landscape material into a developing pre bonsai.

    Noob from Maine

That's awesome, I can't stress enough what an incredible resource you have at your fingertips. I've personally never met or worked with Colin, know those who have, but here's a nickels worth of free advice: you get what you pay for, if you plan to be into Bonsai for the long haul, pay for the...

Lol, best way to get someone to do things the right/best way is to get them before they learn bad habits and tendencies. Working with/studying with someone of his level will shave a decade off of learning Bonsai. If I could go back 16 years and had access to a master level Bonsai professional...

There could be a couple inches of trunk under the soil line thus not making it 'so low' but that is a very defined V.

If I'm not mistaken, Colin Lewis is in Maine, he's one of the best to study under and could knock out any beginner mistakes and tendencies right off the bat.

The V is the graft, very distinct/very clean, should be a nice transition as the red matures, hopefully ithe graft point does not swell and grow faster than the rest of the trunk which can be common in grafted nursery trees.

It wasn't Vance's treatment, someone just wanted to prove a point to all the 'masters' out there. Vance and a host of others tried to explain certain aspects of bonsai beyond the 'tree in a pot' concept. The guy would have none of it. It was on another site. It's done, it's over... probably.

    Please help my bonsai

Beat me to it, my first thought was, bet that pot doesn't have a drain hole.

a 'chop' is a perfectly valid term, as in trunk chop or removing a massive amount of foliage in one step. Nothing explains a drastic process like that better.
