I air layered a large ficus myself this summer as it wasn't going to fit back in the house this autumn.

I used sphagnum moss for the air layer and the ficus put out so many roots that it was almost impossible to untangle them for a good potting. If I ever air layer a ficus again, I intend to use bonsai soil not sphagnum moss.

Damn! I was gonna chop a trunk off yesterday!

Hell yeah Stick!

It ain't different from the last root cutting pic.
One of the big roots around the backish split, got me some bright yellow mushrooms!

I just took it out to spray for mites, by only a west window, it grows ok. But Sun hits the trunk where I need buds, so I am kind of neglecting lighting the top, maybe it will help bud down.

I was contemplating grafting another type of Ben to it. Half to f with it, half cuz I can throw it out today and not care much!

Its kind of BS ing me. Keeps throwing shoots too low, so I may off a trunk, just for s&g.

Giant ficus, sure, more like
Giant Damn Cyclops I feel like poking in the eye!

Damn! Similar? You stole mine! Lol.

Have we seen this before?
I feel like I told you about mine, about yours, maybe it was someone else!

Mine has the exact same too low buds too, which is why I am so hesitant to cut it yet.

I almost took a saw to it yesterday again!
Can't do it yet!

The last pic of your first post actually looks pretty developable. I like that image.

Yeah you have seen it before. I started a thread with it last year sometime. I like it but feel like it is just a little too tall. Maybe i will just leave it to grow wild for a few years

I just tried three layers to start shortening a benji, mostly for the experiance. I cant get sphagnum, so I ripped up some coconut fibers from an old coco. If it works I will do the thicker parts. I have a veriagated about 5' to shorten too. How big of a ball of fibers or moss do I need for a 3" trunk? Baseball size, softball sized, something like that? The 3/8" inch branches have about a golfball size wad of coco fiber. Do you think potting soil would be better than coco fiber? It did work for me once, and I still have the tree.
Thanks Source, for the info and inspiration/encouragement to try air layering with no experiance or help. I think I will attack the veriagated one depending on the opinions on coco fiber. Thanks again.

I think Coco fiber will work....

I think it was Smoke who once said....
You can use anything that stays wet.
Tampons...newspaper....sand...

I would put as much as you can....to let the roots grow out far....before bending and confoculating!

Just remember to chop it small son of rinsed out easy....and you don't tear roots trying to remove it!

Hmm, be nice to reduce the sub roots. That'd be sweet.
Gotta eventually, right?

Cut one of those telephone polls by 2/3 perhaps?

My ficus are 3+ years going on healing scars though, and were smallish.

Hahaha, yeah and it wasn't even 9pm yet. Fighting with my HOA at a condo I rent and it's stressing me out I guess, got stewed last night.

No trees were harmed in my drunkenness.

Holy Crap!

I did not remember how little foliage this had in spring.

What I cut off is on the ground.20161010_100654.jpg

Escaped roots...(blurry)20161010_100704.jpg

I'm just gonna leave em under the pot in the drip tray for now.

That white stuff is that G02 loctite glue.
It was all white black moldy looking, but upon removing it, the wood underneath was clean as a whistle!

Love that stuff.

@dannylightning
Here's the Craiglist ficus.

20161120_181406.jpg
Here's how it's been sitting since 10/10.
No light on the top but it is still growing and hasn't lost a leaf.
It's warm, and humidish, but whoever said ficus drops leaves was bullshitting!
It all about the BIP...

Bring in Pruning.

20161120_181525.jpg
For the ficus lovers....
This is the only one I have that does this explosive collar budding.

That knob in the back ain't a cut branch...it throws those nubs...+/- ?

20161120_181549.jpg
New growth....anywhere above that wound would have been money....but this is a good sign....highest bud yet.
You can see the lower branches.

20161120_181654.jpg
This last image is what I sit and look at.
The view that gives it promise....
Somehow....I see badassness there.

Very far off badassness....but badassness none the less...

Danny, if you are still with me....

There is something to be said about "enjoying a tree".

We argue about it all the time.

I enjoy trees that need to be contemplated.

The 1800 trees kind of make you complacent in that you don't believe the tree needs to be contemplated, that you can "enjoy" it finished.

While there is joy in finished trees, defining the joy you seek is important in your path now.

Contemplate.
