Everyone has had it happen at some point. You're in your first year. You've joined a bonsai club. Someone hands you a freshly potted juniper cutting. Is there potential?

I thought you guys might like to see just such a progression from a little rooted juniper cutting I was given at one of my first bonsai club meetings.

Here we are. Our rooted cutting in July of 2018, roughly 6 to 8 months after I received it.

Then in September and October of 2018 I got brave and tried my hand at wiring.

I spent most of the time between stylings fertilizing with 6-6-6- Dr Earth (fertilizing my developing trees different these days) Here we are in Spring of 2019

We got very bushy and by October of 2019 it was time for another round of pruning and wiring.

Starting to come together and look like something now....

By spring of 2020 I wanted to get it into a "Real" pot.

I repotted into this shallow Japanese rectangle.

By September of 2020 it was looking pretty happy in its new container.

Continuing to fertilize heavily and develop pads. By Fall of 2021 I was ready for a real cleanup. Did some detail wiring, and made some shari to add interest to the trunks.

Pretty much left it to grow in '21 and '22

Finally, here we are in 2023 earlier this year. HAvent had much of a chance to photograph it or do much cleanup this year. However, I'm happy to report that these little cuttings they give away at meetings, with some time and effort, can definitely become enjoyable trees!

I love seeing these progressions.
At this point in the hobby, this is still my favorite aspect. The styling and transformation phase that happens within the first few + years.

Nice work with this one. I like your design approach.

Amazing progression. The ageing looks so good

Pretty cool to see a cutting turn into a tree so quickly.

Great work so far! It appears to have a lot of potential that I no doubt will be realized in the coming years under your care.
