Cjr Crataegus aestivalis 1

Just call me Stumpy #1 etc!

Are these the purebred swamp types, or the cultivars that can handle dry land better?

Looks like you will have plenty of jelly down the line!

I am not sure of the cultivar, I'll have to ask my friend. I think he bought about 500 seedlings and just stuck them into the ground.
If I want jelly, I can collect the berries by the bucket at my friend's land. As it stand, it will be cool to see them on my bonsai later.

Well on its way to be pre-bonsai. I won’t be surprised if it is ready to be chopped again next year.

I think when I bent the young branches I caused some minor damage that retards the flow of nutrient. The tree slows down a bit for a few days. It seems a bit better this morning. I start seeing new leaves being formed at the tips again.

Leader is now at least 2 ft long. I think it needs to be at least double the diameter before the cut would start closing.

Last time I left many branches near the cut. Today they were trimmed.

Your Mayhaw is doing really well. This is an astute observation!

Wiring does damage the plant cells and slow/disrupt the total flow of nutrients, slowing the overall growth of the branch until the pathways are restored. Most folks don’t pick this up 😎

I decided to chop again yesterday since the caliper of the shoot was already near the size I want. The hope is that with the slow growth in the following cool months the internodes will be much shorter.

This tree right now looks like a daisugi.

Current plan is to feed it hard for the straight shoots to grow big. Then the tree will be potted and styled like a daisugi. The straight shoots are now 3+ ft tall.
