Well, it appears the next several days are going to be colder and snowier in Atlanta, GA then Sochi, Russia:D...and that means no school for the kids, and the roads are getting a bit slick so I'm playing it safe and staying home:D. With a little luck, I'll get to work on these three trees I set aside in anticipation of the snow and ice...who says the folks down south don't know how to handle winter weather:cool:.

wow, I can see the ground in your yard. I haven't seen the ground here since the 1st week of December. Well, actually that's not true. I guess I did see the ground when I cut too deep with my track loader plowing snow......

Supposedly, by Thursday AM, my yard will be covered by 4" of snow and ice, with parts further north and east getting upward of 8"...that's a lot for GA.

By the way, I'm still undecided as to whether I should start tomato plants by seed now or wait to get them at the local nursery...there WILL be tomatoes planted in my yard by April 1st. Opinions?

Interesting to compare and contrast...we had 13" of snow last Wednesday. Most of it fell during the day - and pretty much everything remained open. That's what happens when you average about 100" per year.

I used to love snow...now, not so much.

Enjoy your break!

I was thinking about you while watching the weather here in DC/Baltimore. Starting around you and sweeping the coast, due to arrive here about midnight Wednesday and drop 5-8". Definitely tired of this.
Your tomato dilemma is easy for me. I've moved away from the grow-from-seed camp. If they dry out just a bit too much, which is difficult to know til it's too late, the plant and fruit are stunted. I go for the heirloom varieties at the store now. Since I only grow about 6 plants, it doesnt break the bank.
Good luck with whichever way you decide on. Fresh tomatoes are the best.

Amen Brother!

A chance to stay home and work on your trees is a blessing!!! Thank god for my winter enclosure... I almost never have to deal with the weather. Living in Maryland can be harsh on trees and one year I got destroyed and lost many trees to maryland cold. Thats the midatlantic for ya... Colder nights I turn my heater on and I am able to make it. Don how about moving to Maryland? :)

I just looked it up...the latest snowfall ever in Atlanta was on April 25, back in 1910...just letting you know that Ill be PISSED if that happens again:(.

I meant it is forecast to snow in Atlanta on April 2nd :p

The way this winter is going, nothing would surprise me. I knew back in late August when it turned cold early that this was going to be a hard winter.

@NYBonsai: I grew up in Maine so this had been the first "real" winter Ive seen in years. This hasnt been that bad yet.

Dave, even though you guys down there were kind of screwed, I had to laugh listening to the national weather and how it was "AN HISTORIC STORM IN THE SOUTH". Seems snow has never made it down that far in recorded history, either that or someone was trying to sensationalize the news/weather.

It not your ability to drive in it( although you may have been gone too long now) but the others around you , that you have to watch for. Judging by the news coverage I saw re. the driving problems down there, you should stay home and work those trees. Snowy and cccold up here.

Get a couple of six packs of seedlings at the nursery, a bit more expensive , but starting them from seed is a pain for me.

I would hope that everything would be closed and people would be at home if that much snow was predicted down there! The big difference here is that we have an army of snow plows ready to go at any time. Even with that, there are times when even an inch or two of snow can make a giant mess of the roads, if the conditions are right (or wrong). Though I have to admit, I've never seen anything like what happened down there during the recent storm.

In fairness, you transplanted to the south from the NE. Of course you know how to deal with the weather! Looking forward to seeing the work on these trees posted.

One down with two to go:). I deliberately left more foliage then I want because this one has been a spider mite magnet over the last several years AND I might have busted up the cambium pretty good with some of the twists I gave the branches. Fwiw, I will eventually lose the whole apex and make the entire tree out of the one cascading branch.

The Donner Party:
The journey west usually took between four and six months, but the Donner Party was slowed by following a new route called Hastings Cutoff. They should have taken another route.

How do you get there? Let me tell you friends, how do you get there! You take the San Diego Freeway to the Ventura Freeway. You drive to the Slauson Cutoff, get out of your car, cut off your Slauson, get back in your car, then you drive six miles till you see the Giant Neon Vice-Squad Cop. --Art Fern

That's a nice looking job on that tree, glad you are playing it safe and staying in. Too many people try to get out onto the roads in areas that don't have good enough removal plans. And with ice, there really isn't much they can do if it's cold enough. Better to stay off the roads and let the emergency crews have less to deal with.
We still have a big snowpack with 2" of ice on top, then another 4" of snow on that at this point. More coming, but at least here they can deal with it in a day or so from the storms. I have a Subaru, so no problems to get around for me.

I vote seeds. I do about 150 tomato seedlings, 50 for my parents, 50 for my sister, and 50 for me. (we all have huuuuuge gardens) If you have the setup to do it, it's worth it.
