Thought I'd share the amazing spring leaf color on this J. Red Beech. As decent as the photos are, the color is even more nuanced in person. There are 2 possible fronts, just developing for now...

Nice. Wonderful color you got there. My backyard is all green right now, this would have added much needed color. :)

Did I see you pinched this? If so, welcome to the pinching group. :D

That's exactly what they look like, as if they were hand painted Grimmy.
I lucked into this tree, and am happy with the direction it's going. I do pinch beech in the spring, unless I want longer growth.
I like to work with trees that are a bit out of the norm for bonsai, keeps it interesting!
Thanks all.

I've never seen this species before. Really beautiful! Where did you get it?

I got it from someone who was downsizing their collection, not sure where it came from originally. The leaves don't stay this color for too long, they'll harden off and turn green for the summer, but the opening is sure spectacular.

yup. straight. Both my beeches. They seem to love it.... No leaf issues at all so far.

Going in this pot at some point....

Wouldn't those new leaves look stunning in that color.

I've heard of using Kanuma for beech, and I bet it works well for their slow absorption rate, but I'll be eager to see how the roots behave. Mine tend to be somewhat stringy and matted using akadama and lava, wonder what they look like after a few years in Kanuma.

Nice pot; can't place it. Looks like a Byron Myrick glaze but not his clay...?

Beautiful species of beech Judy!! The leaves look like they were airbrushed with red tones over the green. So unique! Love the pot as well and will look stunning in it. Very nice and thanks for sharing!

What I like best is the movement on that first left branch...it gives a unique movement of the whole tree...very few trees feel like they are dancing...but this one does that to me.

Nice leaves, looks like the european red beech (there are different variations of red color) fagus sylvatica atropurpureum i have. I never heard of japanese red beech, where have you found it?

I got the tree from a fellow nutter (raydomz) that was selling off most of his collection. I do not know where he acquired the tree to begin with, I know his local club has some good auctions. He told me that it was Japanese Red beech, but in looking for that cultivar, I don't find it, so it probably one of the European ones. The leaves to me look different than the purple beeches I have seen, much more crenellated, and a much more delicate coloration. So I figured it was something else. I'll see if I can find out anything more from Ray.

The pot is (ding ding evimbo) Iker. :)

So far I'm pleased with the kanuma, the leaves are much happier than in the old soil mix.
Will see about the roots....

Judy, try copper beech or red obelisk beech, both are sylvatica.
