Ok I got 10 bare root Crepe Myrtle seedlings and gave them the following care:

http://evergreengardenworks.com/rootprsd.htm

There are two side projects I did with these from recent threads I have read. On one I inserted the trunk into a CD and pushed the cd down to the crown and planted it. The idea here is like the tile planting as the trunk grows the cd will girdle the trunk and then the cd will push the roots out.

Another, is a root cutting. If things live and turn out interesting, I will post updates and pictures.

So my wife got to counting all the Crapes and she said, "do you think we can actually plant one and have a real tree?" So I said, "Sure that is a great idea!" While thinking, " real tree indeed! GRRR:mad: Knowing in my head that I would dig it up in a few years! :;)

Be careful they catch on.....My wife now has a rule....anything that gets planted in the yard does not get dug up for bonsai......LOL

LOL my wife is the same way.....and she wonders why I have to keep buying different material for bonsai. Then I just ask her why she has to keep buying multiple pairs of shoes for the same outfit! :D LOL

I imagine your trick with the CD will work very well. I grew one of my crape myrtle seedlings over a tile and it has a perfect nebari. When I dug it up it had roots radiating perfectly in all directions. I fed it heavily while it was in the ground that year and, no kidding, it probably quadrupled in size. I guess our long growing season helped too.
