Black pines this spring. How are yours looking. After putting some wire on and seeing the new growth I have been very happy with my two pathetic trees. If all goes well this year, I will get a nice tree so I will be able to give you a run for the money.

Here, you can see one of my best pines since Kong won't show. I have three. :D LOL. Beat that Kong! :D This was a volunteer seedling that sprouted in one of my pots. It is a Pinus eldarica.

milehigh,
How old is this pine? How did you achieve the branching? I have some pine seedlings about the same size but they are straight with no side branches starting. Thanks

Frank

Are you sure that's a pine? I don't see any candles/buds like I would expect on a pine. That looks more like a cedar or needles juniper.

Frank It is about 1 1/2 years old. Honestly it just popped all those branches I could not believe it myself. What is more is that it has even more branches popping out now. All I have done to it is to snip off the top just above one of the buds. This just caused more budding. That picture was from March 9th

Dave, I am pretty sure, they are the only pines that grow well here. They come up wild all over and pretty much all look like this. I know next to nothing about pines however so I will defer to the experts. I will say this, it sprouted under several Pinus eldarica with no juniper or cedar for miles.

Hey KK, since you ask me personally, I will try to answer your question with a couple of pictures one more time and hope I don't spark another "debate". This is a picture of my three Kotobukis, they are always the first to bud out. I must be closer to the climate they are used to. My other JBP's are just starting to put on small buds. I thought I would show you a picture of the small one. It was on ebay and didn't sell, so after the auction was over, I contacted the owner and made him an offer and he excepted. I think it will make a fine little tree.

cordially,
Harry

PS: I'm sorry, I went back and added a coke can, just for you......:)

Thanks Harry. Just what I wanted to see. My first year of feeling confident growing jbp and I wanted to see your tree's candle progress compared to mine and I am at the same point as you. Top view shows off the nice wire job on those branches. Allot of work ahead for me. Nice new member!

Nice trees Harry,

How many "finished" trees do you maintain? From the post over the years and even taking in to account the numbers you sale and buy you have a 50 hour + week job taking care of all theses.

But then its not a job if you love it is it?

I have 22 trees. Being all conifers they don't require much maintance during the growing season, once you've pruned the junipers, all that is required is water and fert. JBP's are three season trees, some don't require repotting but every 2-3 years and they are 2 season trees.Shohins usually need to be repotted every year, but I can repot all of mine in 4 hours. Once you decandle them in June here, all you do is water them until fall when you fert. them to help put on next years candles. Conifers are a lot easier to maintain than D trees.
