I wanted to start a thread to keep track of the progress for this Amur maple I purchased from a member here about two and half years ago. A couple of weeks ago it was completely wired and styled into a sort of informal broom, or at least the beginning of one.

It was repotted into a Tokoname container. Alhtough I think it's ok for now, down the road I'd like to find a pot with sharper corners and darker color. Perhaps even unglazed? I also added a couple of dwarf Sea Lavender (Limonium Binervosum) plants to add some additional interest. This is something I do not usually do but thought to try it out here. Next step is to let this tree grow wild and in another couple of months cut it back again to keep on building a rounded and ramified canopy.

Below is the tree as it looked during the summer of 2014.

I do not have any photos of how the tree looked before being styled but here it is now.

This is a virtual of what I am aiming for in possibly another 5 years or so.

Some nice potential there, you will want the taper in the branches too so itll take a while but worth it. You are building a nice collection seeing what you post

How do you find the trees that have those great reaching nebari? Or do they find you? Almost creepy how that works. Quite a lot of nice movement for an amur, I think you pared it down well to show that off. I think the pot is quite nice for it, at least in shape and size. Can't see it in unglazed, but you never know till you try it.

Mike I have a tendency to give rather conservative projections. But I do say that because I want to avoid building the canopy too fast where you end up with lots of straight sections and long internodes with little ramification in between. But less is always good!

I just wondered because the ones I've seen in the ground and the one I have grow pretty fast.

Thanks Judy. I am not sure because I buy lots of trees via photos which is always risky business. Do rest assured that I have gotten my small share if disappointments along the way. Glad you like the pot its in but for me is a bit soft. I think this tree needs something with more masculine lines?? Will have to see.

Yes you are right Mike but fast does not necessarily equal a fast bonsai. I think Japanese maples can also grow fast but to actually build a properly ramified canopy is another matter.

Good score Serg; already has your touch.
The only thing that distracts me is that right trunk. It's so heavy when so many other thin branches could do the job as well. Thoughts?

Another beauty, great work as always. All those fine branches wired! Were they brittle in comparison to other maples? I like the pot too, perhaps in leaf the tree will feel softer to you and more at home in the pot. With every tree you post you make me want to go out and find another maple to work with. guess I'll be on the lookout now!

Thanks NY! Yes pot is not bad at all. You are right, the image will look softer with leaves although I do prefer to match when trees are bare. I'll keep it in this pot for a while and see. No! Amur branches are quite flexible and resilient!!

Great tree, and I really like the pot, as well. It looks like it has a fair amount of patina developing, which is nice when you've got a trunk that looks so old planted in it. Keep up the great work!

ps I agree with Brian about that right trunk, but I'm sure it will sort itself out.

Thanks Dave! The pot I bought recently from carobone, a member here. It has a beautiful patina. I tried to use it on my MAPLE #5 but I did not like the pairing. This combo is much better.

Yes also agree with Brian's suggestion. I will say looking at it again this morning, the "offending" branch looks much better in person. Nevertheless I think is a great suggestion and one I will for sure consider as the tree progresses.

has anyone ever tried to do amur maples ROR? just curious

I was thinking the one I have may go for it. But when I pulled it out of the oil dry all I had was feeders.

Maybe from a seedling, or something with good roots for it from the start.

Mach5,

Great Nebari, love the moss job.

Look at the MOSS! And the little plants are perfect.

I wouldn't want to see a more masculine pot. Unless it is to compliment the very masculine trunk. The fine branching you wish to achieve still says femme to me.

I think many pots would be more appropriate.

The moss! Friggin the moss!
