Mr. Sweeney,

Have you had a chance to photograph your "Zuisho" yet? I am very interested in taking a look at it.

Bonsai Outlaw,

I took a picture a long time ago but never posted it as better pictures than I took of better plants than I have were posted. But since I made you asked twice...

I wired the tree about 2 months ago to introduce some movement to the lower trunk and to open up the plant to the sun.

Regards,
Martin

Thank you for sharing Mr. Sweeney.

I can understand that, but there are very few growers of "Zuisho" here in the states showing any pictures, so the way I see it any pictures are better than none.

I recieved three more for Christmas and I plan on adding the pictures to this thread when I get a lil wire on them.

I'm hoping to get one next february. Actually, I'm getting it from Julian Adams, who ya'll have talked about earlier. hoping to use it not only as a bonsai but as a plant to reproduce a stock plant in the future. I'd take a cutting and then use THAT one for the stock plant...either way I can't wait to get it. From the looks of yours (collectively) it looks like a fun little cultivar!

Here is a Zuisho I got from Brent in '06. I think it was grafted in '04, so it's had 4 seasons so far. I haven't pruned anything on it, just let it grow, and for a dwarf, it grows impressively well. It's about 17" tall now, and I'm debating on whether I'll wire some movement into the trunk, or just let it go and do a chop in a few years.

Also...for reading material on Zuisho, Bonsai Today has articles in #8 (history of), #9 (rock planting), #26 (formal upright), #43 (the first Zuisho), #77 (propagation from cuttings), #81 (shaping), and #84 (shaping).

Can any of you give me your experience in terms of the difficulty growing and maintaining this wonderful tree? On a scale of 1 to 10 can you tell me how hard it is to grow? And any suggestions for growing this one? I just ordered one, and am hoping that I can keep it alive!

I've had no problems at all. I am in Birmingham AL, and it gets no winter protection (temps down in the teens lately). So far, I've just allowed it to grow and it does that nicely 4"-5" candles at a time and noticable thickening of the trunk each summer. I slip-potted it into a larger container in '08 and it pushes growth pretty impressively in April and a little again in August-September; which is rewarding. In the heat of summer, I give it AM sun and PM dappled light, near my hornbeam and J. maple. Although it isn't even a bonsai , it is one of my favorite trees.

On a 1-10, I'd give it a 1-easiest so far, but really, all I've done is water and feed it. I think the thing I noticed is that it grows better sited like a maple than a black pine.

Hi Brian,

Thank you so much for the reply! I live in Louisiana so it's a little hotter down here, but I can keep Japanese Maples, so why not 'Zuisho'? In any case, that last sentence is what I needed to hear! If I can keep a JM alive, I think that I can keep a 'Zuisho alive as well. Only thing that I'm worried about is the winter temps not getting down low enough (Julian Adams said that down here it might not). But I think that I could manage...

Anyway, thanks again for the help. Greatly appreciated!

Hi David...I'd guess you'll be fine if you can grow J. maples. I'd be more concerned with summer heat than winter cold (I'd also suspect winter duration is more significant than temp). Enjoy! They are a great variety.

Anybody else's 'Zuisho' starting to grow? Mine is (but this is down here in LA--it's 80 degrees outside today!)

Just starting to push now...candles are about 1/2" long. Looking at my photos, it's a little later this year than last.

An update on my Zuisho! It's looking good, and I think that I'm going to use it as a stock plant, because I just do not see any viable options in the tree unless I cut most of it off, which I don't want to do.

Brian, thank you so much for the info. I have it situated where my Japanese Maples are and it's looking good. Just out of curiosity, how high do your summer temperatures get? My Zuisho did not push much growth this year, but I think that's just because it was shipped, root pruned, and otherwise messed with this year. I anticipate that it'll grow much more next year.

Regards,
David

How about you guys start a new thread on zuisho instead of resurrecting this one? Let Bonsai Outlaw, ignominiously banned because he let someone push his buttons too much, rest in peace.
