hey i'm david from belgium.
i'm new here on the forums and totally new to the world of bonsai.

i purchased my first bonsai 1 month ago.
i bought it in a huge store that sells lots of flowers, trees, and other plants 'n stuff.

when i started searching the web about my Ulmus i started doubting my "bonsai" since they said that mostly a "bonsai" bought in such a shop isnt a bonsai.

i paid 12.5€ for it :D
and the card said it should be 6 years of age.

anywayz here is my tree

btw the pot that its in now is made from klay (like bricks) what i've noticed is that when i water it
the pot sucks allot of the water out of the dirt.

should i change pot? or leave it like this?

Hello david,

I just want to welcome you to this site and to bonsai. I am a beginner also so I will not be able to give you much advice. However, there are many very knowledgeable people here that can get you started right.

Again welcome! :D

David,

Be prepared to do quite a lot of learning new things and reading. Until someone jumps in to give you specific help with your tree, here are a few place to find good information that will help you on your way. I would read everything on these sites:

Specific advice for Ulmus:

Hi David,

I would wait until fall before repotting it, then protect it from frost all winter. Look for a club/association close to you, as it will be the fastest/cheapest way to progress and acquire quality plants. Which area of Belgium do you live in?

Hi David, here you'll find a list with all the bonsai nurseries in Belgium. All worth a visit.

yes it can go out till the fall when it gets frosty, longer if you don't repot. These are hardy for the most part, and No you do not need to bring it in at night.
