1 gal berberis - $10
Chinese pot with mar in finish - $8
Pimping your newly found and styled barberry potensai - Priceless...

Also following on Chris' multi-trunk thread, here is a barberry that I found nursery diving (similar to dumpster diving - you jump in head first, paw through all the garbage and crap that nobody else wanted, and hope that you come out with something that might be useful at some point in the future) last week with Jason. It was a landscape tree that was dug and put into a 1 gallon nursery pot full of clay, and probably sat there for a couple years based on the number of roots and amount of moss covering the entire tree.

Anyway, 11 sub trunks. Took everything down to new buds, and will leave it alone to grown new branches and develop over the years. This is a picture of the back, as the roots forced me to pot it towards the back of the pot and well, it looked pretty lame in that picture (well, lame-er, and let's be honest, it doesn't really matter anyway). As usual, the pic sucks and I need to provide a better one someday.

Please note, this is my first barberry bonsai, as I believe that the one and only good use of barberries is to plant them outside your daughter's bedroom window to keep her in and the young suitors out. Regardless of that strong belief, I did manage to grab this, style it and post it - in tribute to every noob out there that has done the same thing. I am now one of the gang. Truly Priceless...

I had a totally free day so I thought I would play for a few hours. Here is one I worked on. Before - without being touched since the last picture. After - removing old wire, guy-wiring a few trees, removing thorns, wiring secondary branches. When spring (and some dry weather) comes I will clean the base better (using Walter's secret trunk cleaning sauce), and add a top-dressing to the soil to make it purty. It is 10" high from the top of the pot & 11" wide. I would like to see it get slightly higher and wider with ramifcation, but don't expect the trunks to change position too much.

With a second year in this pot, I will feed heavy and trim often as it needs plenty of ramification. In two years it will get a nice pot (suggestions welcome) and hopefully end up being a nice little nursery-obtained clump.

Self Defense Trees!

I have a number of "bars" growing on my Eastern Pa. digs. The biggest is by the front edge of a stream on the side of my property, and I keep it there to keep the local neighborhood kids from tramping thru the flower beds...where my trees overwinter!
Glad to see there are others who can use their trees as "self defense" items!
You're correct...priceless!
