Those of you that live in an around hot beds of bonsai activity won't appreciate this as much as those of us in the fly over states. We are lucky to have two talented bonsai nuts that have spent their time and money to learn proper techniques to style and maintain JBP. They are SOB's (students of Boon) me on the other hand I'm the old fashion SOB. The best part, they are willing to share their knowledge and skill with us less fortunates for as fraction of what they paid.Saturday we spent the day with Sylvia and Howard Smith in Dallas learning the correct way to decandle and prune our JBPs. Two nicer people, you will never meet. I carpooled with a friend since it's 200 miles from OKC to Dallas. I took three trees to work on.

This JBP I wanted to work on but Sylvia wouldn't let me, I can't imagine why. She decandled it and Howard thinned out the needles, I still think I could have done it....:p

Pictures of the rest of the group, eight in all......

A nice bunch of people to spend a Saturday with....... The attractive young black haired lady is Ms Slyvia working on my tree. The gentleman in the gray shirt working on the large JBP is Howard, Sylvia's husband Howard and my friend David Waldo who hauled my butt to dallas is in the blue shirt.

Boy---That looked like a fun weekend. Question! Where do you get those adjustable tables, you seem to have one for every body. I realized how much something like that could make my work on my Spruce and Larch much easier; realizing that every year they get a little heavier and I get a little less able to lift them.

I believe Howard said he built those out of old barber chairs. The tops turn also, sure makes it nice to to work on. The one Sylvia is working on is a professional built one.

keep it green,

Looked like a lot of fun Harry, especially with the really nice trees there. Thanks for sharing.

Oh, and your trees aren't so bad either :)

Harry, I couldn't agree more, japanese black pines are my favorite trees and when you can take a Saturday with bonsai friends and work on pines, I'm all for it. Nice trees.:D

Aw hell Dwight...Folks not from Texas don't understand how we measure things like distance to a friends house or a great steak :D Yup well worth a trip of 300 or so miles:cool:

Frank Kroeker and I drove to Brussels one day to buy a tree, 500 miles each way, with time for BBQ lunch at Corkey's and a 1 hour visit, now that's serious bonsai.

keep it green,
Harry

gas: $180
BBQ w/ beverage(s) of choice: $80
Bonsai from Brussels: $1200
Not forking over $50 for a motel: priceless

Harry looked like a good weekend. I just got my first pine a week ago Tuesday. The visuals are great and give a newb like me a good reference for what to achieve with the techniques I read about. Thanks for sharing.
