Here are a couple of examples of some interesting deadwood that I found in the forest. Wouldn't it be fun to be able to get these colors in the deadwood of the bonsai?

Here are a couple of more photos. These are bristle cone pines which grow in the White Mountains along the CA/Nev border. These are the oldest living species of tree in the world.

Awesome pictures!!! You should start a thread or keep this one going with all your nature pics.

Does anyone have a bristle cone pine bonsai? I know you can't collect these, Can you find these trees in any nursery?

They sell these tree commercially. There is a nursery in Atascadero (Laurel's) that had a pretty nice one last year. Next time I'm through there I'll see if its still there.

I drove to the sierra's Sunday with my wife and dog just to see some nature. I too found a few nice things along the way. July 12th and I never seen so many wild flowers in those hills this late in my life. The entire mountain range was green with grasses and wild flowers. Awesome sight in the middle of summer. We are in for 105 temps for the next 12 days.

This tall pine is entirely dead and covered with moss!

This western red cedar is growing right out of the granite...

the river banks were covered with honeysuckle and the fragrance was intoxicating.

A very beautiful day in the mountains. This was around 6000 feet.

Nice photos, Al, I especially like the Mariposa lily (white flower, three petals) and the Spirea (pink flower). Looks like you had a good day in the mountains.
