Spotted this thing while looking at fruit trees today. Nursery owner wasn't sure what is it but probably some kind of prunus or other flowering decorative tree. Got it for free:)

You can always cut more next year!

Thats a helluva start!

Nice ! Free? Oh yeah!

Thats what I planned, hoping it will grow like crazy this year and put on a ton of fine roots. I was really surprised when she offered it for free, I expected to pay a least a little but she was happy to get it out of the way:)

I trimmed of few of the branches back and removed a couple that needed to go. Hoping that will encourage some more back buds.

Looks like rootstock, some type of prunus. The grafted portion probably died off. I've been thinking of getting one of these for grafting ume next year.

I was actually wondering about it being root stock. I should find out where the nursery gets their tree and see if I can track down what they are using for root stock. Not that it will help at all, I've had no luck finding out what different root stock looks like when it blooms. I'm really beginning to hate grafted trees, have you ever tried to find a nursery JM thats not grafted? I've given up

Well Done! Me too!

Sometimes you can find one with a branch of "standard" coming from the rootstock.
I look for those....and if you get a layer of the top to take....bonus!

At least they are no longer $69.99-129.99.
For burnt crap!
They're marked about half that now it seems.

There's a 10 gallon stella cherry at my work that died down to the graft probably 4 yrs ago, I've had my eye on it for a year now. It's trunk is easily 6" with several new trunks coming off of it, also there are a bunch of root suckers so I can have a bunch of babies too! If I was you I probably would've tossed some roots into pots just to see what they would do.

If I ever find one that has a nice top to airlayer, thats what I plan but most are pretty straight.

@aaron, you need to get that thing! How did you resist for so long? lol Never though about potting the roots, I still could since I left my mess sitting on the sidewalk. Don't know if I really need more mystery plants though.
