I've got a Black Pine that appeared to have a fungus (Yellow Bands on Needles). I have sprayed it with fungacide. The effected needles died, but new growth sprang up and the needles looked healthy. The same problem happened again, and again the needles died but new growth replaced them. I'm on my third set of buds/needles, and it's happening again. Please help!

Cut back on the H2O, JBP don't like too much water or wet feet. Do you have good draining soil...?

50% akadama, and 50% sand (grit). It also gets full GA sun all day.

I use Daconil to prevent needle cast. Google these to learn more and the treatment procedure.

What part of GA are you from, is the humidity high, it sounds as if your soil mix is fine.

I live in NC with a very similar climate to GA. I also use Daconil. If I see cast on a tree I apply Daconil to the entire tree. I reapply after two weeks as a follow up. This seems to work well in controlling the cast.

Do you water or get rain often? My mix is 100% inorganic and I water twice a day, with my JBPs in full sun. I try not to water the foliage when I'm watering, but I'm in the DC area, and we get a lot of heavy rains (actually it just started pouring rain a second ago). In the last two years since I've been doing bonsai, I have never gotten needlecast on my pines.

That being said, I do tend to get a lot of fungal infections on certain deciduous trees, especially on my chinese elms (only on the "regular" variety, not my cork barks which seem to rarely, if ever, get black spot). No matter how careful I am, my regular elms are constantly getting black spot. Thankfully my regular elms are cheap stock, so I'm considering not even bothering with them anymore.

I wonder if some fungal infections are more prevelant in certain areas - for example, where you are, needlecast and where I am, black spot?

Has it happened in one season or from year to year? Which month of the year did you notice the yellow bands? The reason I ask because there are 2 kinds of fungus which causes needle cast. Because of this, there are 2 different ways to approach those problem, I mean the timing of apply chemical. Did you water the pine overhead? If you did, please don't do that. Wetting needle makes a good environment for fungal development. Prevention is always better than the treatment. Bonhe

It's just been this year. I don't water overhead, but it is very humid where I live and we've had alot of rain.

Wow, it means the fungus is very aggressive, because the fungus affected to the pine normally has annual live cycle; that means it affected to the tree once a year. Or possible your area is too humid so that fungus can continuously grow? Bonhe

We all have problems trying to grow species that are not well suited to our climates, it sounds like you have solved the problem with growing JBP's in your area, keep up the good work.
