Oh if I lived in Japan...

Here's a nice pine cascade for sale currently on Yahoo! Auctions Japan. It needs a lot of detail work, but the fundamentals are all there. Listed at $160. Buy it now for $360.

To date I have liked pretty much all of the Japan Auction images, till this one. While one can't complain about the price. The cascading branch is to straight and well boring. I think if I were fortunate enough to obtain I would definitely have to cut it back and try and utilize some of the thicker branches closer to the top, and then wait. I see this tree as a workable challenge.

I agree. However I will bet that with a little detailed wiring - separating the foilage, breaking loose a clearly defined apex, etc - it would look 100% better. Likewise I guarantee you could put a little curve in the middle. It is white pine after all not oak :) You would only need about 5 degrees or so right in the middle to bring the branch down just a little more. I've got my extra large branch bender that would manage it in a couple months. I will do a virtual later today.

Looking forward to the Virt.

Branch benders are a neat thing to have. I have one of the big Japanese benders as well, in fact I have a bigger bender for planks and ribs that I brought from the boat business which I adapted for large trees. Still, in my minds eye a cascading branch needs a little more than a S curve. Not that I don't have some of that same description sitting on my bench. I always pass by them, the little voice in the back of my head screams...BORING :)

You know what; I agree with you but... It is funny - I don't feel like I have completely mastered "boring" technical bonsai. So I always look at bonsai first very technically. I think once I start working on them I try to improve them and make them more interesting. But I have not yet reached the point where the magical art phase comes naturally. For me it is still 1, 2, 3. I'll bet some of the Japanese masters go right past and think a, 1, B, xXx, %^. :)

Just playing with Photoshop a bit, what about a semi-cascade for this tree?

Indeed an unbelievable price. Too bad they arent' shipping these trees to Europe or the rest of the world at these prices..

I don't think the tree is improved at all with that big prune. I might shorten it some, but not that much!

... and I'm climbing a stairway to heaven. Some nice ramification was developed over the years that much is evident. The trunk seems forced into the angle, further exacerbated with the long staight branch. Undoubtidly the enthusiast has mastered balancing the energy in this tree.

I must study this tree further to further quantify my opinion and perhaps offer a possible future solution. Although one might go gaga in the beginning, once one carefully studies this tree, it is no longer as breathtaking.

white pine

I could kill that in two years .... tops

I wouldn't move to where I could have white pines, but they sure are nice to look at.

As to the tree, I think that branch would look much better shortened. Maybe not quite like Darrell did, but something in that neighborhood.
