I know along while ago Al Keppler wrote some great articles/posts about CA Junipers on Bonsai Talk. I was wondering if anyone had access to them or if they are viewable anywhere?

Thank you,

You can try to PM Al but he might not respond any time soon. He is in zen mode and has unpugged from the internet. He is enjoying a vacation from the forums.

Not a bad time to unplug, here in California. The trees are growing like crazy this time of the year (it is like a second Spring), it takes a full time job just to maintain them, if one has a large collection, like Al.

One question I'm wondering about CA Junipers.

I'm trying to find some location's where CA Junipers grow near Santa Margarita or San Luis Obispo CA. I have heard several people say they grow near Santa Margarita. I would like to go knocking on door's to try and get permission to collect on private land. And someday maybe gain access for our local club to go collecting.

I have driven around for several hours in the hills of Santa Margarita looking out of my car window for CA Junipers, but have not seen any. Off the 101, I get off on the Santa margarita exit, then drive out on highway 58. I have driven highway 58 for about 1 hour, but then turned around because I did not see anything. Any tips or suggestions about where I may be able to find Junipers?

I'm wondering if I should take 229? or maybe just continue on 58?

Thank you!

Hi all, It is true I have unplugged from the world...but due to a divorce. After 26 years we have decided to split. It is very sad time as we are still very friendly. We will never lose touch though we can no longer live together.

Due to my wifes job and heavy internet use in her job she has taken the computer. I will plug back in sometime in the near future when things settle out.

Take care and do try to stay on track while I'm away.

Al, sorry to hear of your trouble.

I hope you find some solace in bonsai. It's helped me get through some difficult professional times lately.

I'm very sorry to hear this, Al. My neighbors recently went through the same ordeal, after over 20 years as well. Hang in there and keep up your positive attitude. Thanks for everything you've contributed to the forums(S).

I recently found this small thread. My wife and I were separated for about 6 months and found we could not live without each other. We got back together and she retired four years later and died of cancer four years after that. I nursed her thru the four year ordeal and was there till the end. Coming up on one year since her death in a couple months....I can't believe where the time goes.

I had a copy at one time that I saved off. I thought I sent it to him. It would have been a VERY long time ago. I can look through some old backups and see if I have one that I am thinking of.

I would like to sit down and have a beer with you sometime Al... There are a few things I would like to talk to you about face to face that I am not sure many others would understand. Sorry to kick this back up I wish I would have read it all the way through before I did.

On the bright side I recently dusted off a couple of old computers to check for papers I published years ago and I might have one of the Juniper articles. If memory serves you nearly killed yourself packing it out I believe???? Tripped maybe??? Can't remember brain is foggy from underuse.

Yes the tree is called tripper.

I still have it and it is due for a restyle. I just shot this pic

Some pics as dug and some other photos as it went thru the motions. In the last two photo's you can see that the left side died off. That was the Keppler Kalamity of 2014 when I nearly killed off the entire collection from the first sprinkler accident. And then the one last year. One more should just about do it.

I have just been nursing it back since 2014 and ready to restyle it now.
