Anyone know what species this is? It was collected by someone in our local Bonsai Society years ago and has changed hands a couple times now.

Also, ideas on pinching and/or pruning so that I can try to prevent this browning on the inner growth?

Thanks for any advice in advance. - Boise_Guy

The browning usually occurs when not enough light is reaching those areas. That doesn't seem to be the issue here as there is not a lot foliage on the tree. Where are you keeping it and how much (in hours) full sun is it getting?

BTW it's a Juniper of some sort.

I think it's a Common Juniper to be exact.

Somehow....that doesn't make sense!
Lol!

Nice future this tree could have!

Pinch fight!

Common Juniper t
I have one of these things and it does this every year. I'm probably going to set it free. I can't stand the thing. It looks half dead all of the time.
By setting free I mean I'm pulling it out of the colander and giving it a toss into the swamp. If it lands on its root pad it might even make it.

Does this sound better? Juniperus communis ;)

I am so glad that this came up and with two of the more respected members here.
Both of them are old enough to have memories of this. When I was in early high
school the "Pineapple Guava" was considered a tropical magnolia; then for a few,
several severals actually, if was a Michelia; and now an Acca. Has the plant changed?
Not in the least little bit; it is just our understanding, means of testing, and gene mapping
that have changed things.
Slowly the botanical world is unraveling what is their "tree of life" and the rest of us are just
along for the ride. You will run up on "communis", "vulgaris", "occidental", "orientalus",
and a host of others.
Communis in this case is much the same as chinensis; there are literally dozens of different
ones--observably different enough that anyone would be surprised to know they are all
Juniperus communis. Just about the only thing these strains [what you call a plant that is
different enough to notice it but not yet named as a species] is needled foliage and a band
of one sort or another (sometimes more than one) on the foliage. At some point they will
get enough attention and all these pigeon holed "common junipers" will be broken off into
their own species.
Until then? I'll take a communis that has characteristics I like; you should too. There really are
some cool ones out there--just like vulgaris or any of the other lesser designations.
Buy the plant--damn the name.

[{Somebody call 911 !} {There goes sorce's heart hearing such heresy, of this magnitude, from me!}]

Very exciting times we live in; wish I had another hundred years to study.

Its on a south facing bench where it gets full sun all day, practically from sunrise to sunset. Too much sun maybe...esp with the heat we can get here (90's F)?

Thanks for all the replies everyone.

I took a swing at styling it. I'm not sure it's good enough, but it took so long to do it that eventually I had to call it good at some point. Opinions welcome, but keep in mind I'm a noob! I had wired it some awhile back and the wiring is a bit of a mess...I know I crossed some wires here or there, cut me a little slack there if you are willing. I swear this looks better to me in person than it does in these pics...kind of disappointing when I look at them...sigh. Anyway, @sorce has been hounding me to post some of my non-ficus trees...so here goes.

Nice!

If Hounding is one simple request....;)
You guys must give you Cougars Hell!:p

I only have one, or one per branch maybe, request.....
But let me give you it on this that I like as a front....a lot!aviary-image-1468666181093.jpeg

I'd like to see the yellow joint bent down, and the green joint, back up and to the left, so that pad comes forward within the Orange....

But that's a wicked image right there...
Of course....don't whack the top off yet...but I would eventually!

Thanks for sharing!

Lol!

Nice...
But the down part is to keep it off the same plane as the other side...

If you keep that up, I'm gonna have to "adidas" you!
