on a post in the maple section the idea came to me on fusing seedlings, this could easily be done with elms i presume as well.
has anyone tried this or have any experience. its just that chinese elms handle my climate better then maples for some reason.

any thoughts or advice would be good.

regards jamie

lol, all good mate. i know it seems like an obvious question but i was actually hoping someone might have done this before or has seen it done. maybe some photos or a progression of this would be good, i should have been clearer in the initial post.
anything along the lines would be appreciated.
thanks in advance

the thing to do would be to think of this along the lines of what is being done with Ficus. You may not find any progressions using elms simply because they grow so damn fast as it is... but if you are after big trunks I say give it a try and make sure you document it for the rest of us.

yea not so much like that as such rick. using an open frame with lots and lots and lots of sapplings. basicaly creating a hollow trunk. but you probly already knew that was what i was talking about.
it allows for great options in the design process and gives options in the shape style and how the tree goes because it is basically fully designed by the person creating it. now this may seem unnatural but the results speak for themselves.

this was the site that mortalis found that has given me the inspiration. it explains what i want to do. but obviously with elm, and the choice of elm is because they seem to handle the climate and conditions of where i am better than the maples :)

yup thaz the maple seedling guy.... strangely we don't see many of those around

There is a reason for that...lol...ever try to do one? I did, and I would rather build a ship in a bottle blindfolded while being beat about the nogg'n with a 2x4.

To do one of medium size you need 50 whips or better.....the mortality rate can be high. If you have an anal personality you might just be able to pull it off....but of the dozen or so people I know that tried it few came out with something that they would be proud of.

well this might just work for me then.. I can be quite stubborn when i get something in my head. something has been brought to my attention tho with elms.
being thicker in bark the fusing might cause a problem as the elm seems to like to keep a rounder trunk (hard to explain in writing).
i still think it is worth the effort of trying this as I am exited about the whole project. detail progression will be kept as to follow everything i do. even if it is a failure i will still have tried which to me it is better to gout down trying than to just lay down and give up! :)

Coming to think of it Tom, I have never seen one outside of dugz site and, his hasn't been updated neither. Probably too busy whipping trees into shape;)

It was all the rage for a while Rick...then people actually tried to do it and realized that this was a sado-masochistic ritual...and that ended that.

Now, if you think about this you know it to be true...because when a new technique is thrown out to the community a dozen websites and a 100 threads spring up shortly after extolling the virtue of that technique and how that person has mastered it. Now this technique was introduced a while ago ... and your right ... ain't seen no other sites about it.

I see another problem with this technique, the large hollow left behind to collect moisture and humidity, especially with the newer versions. Regardless at $5500 I believe he was dipping into a different cultivar ;) A novel idea which I believe has failed because his site has not been updated and we haven't seen any on the net. Surely because it is accessible from the net we should have seen at least one or two, but none.
