Hey all! I did an air layer on one of my ficus and was wondering if the little bottom part of the layer needed to be sealed. It is the little stump. Right now I have it in a plastic bag to see if it will send up new shoots as I was told it would. So does the little stump need sealing or should it be left alone?

And the upper portion of the Layer:

I have been told a couple of times by visiting artist that the latex the ficus bleeds will take care of that for you, so no you don't need to put on a cut paste/sealer.

Thanks Bill. Mine didn't bleed any though. My Ficus microcarpa bleeds like crazy.

Would it be best also to place a small dish under the air layer area of the upper cut portion so I can get some nice nebari?

Yes but be careful that you don't put something that will let water pool under the trunk.

Alternately, arranging the roots out radially when planting in the new bonsai soil will do that for you, it's young so to speak so working the roots at repottings should keep them looking good.

I think you should be alright without sealing the wound on the base. Anything popping yet on the stump?

Thanks again Bill. THe little stump has not shot off anything at all yet. I placed the bottom of a pot (the reserve piece) underneath the trunk and repotted it. Lets hope for the best.
