I thought I would share the nice color of this spirea. The tree has some work left to do in the roots and branching, but the foliage is very nice right now. I used the light blue pot just for this reason. The leaves will only stay on a couple of weeks once they turn color. Tree is 8 inches tall, about 12 inches wide.

Very nice tree, thanks for sharing. The fall color on those trees is really nice - Harry Harrington has a nice one on his website I believe.

Might have to find one for my benches :)

They are easy to find in garden centers, and easy to train, just sharpen your scissors for the constant pruning.

Nice! I bought a spirea this year. Let's see what it does! No color for me yet though.

Hi Dave, did you end up having to plant it in the ground to get that nice trunk?

No planting in the ground, I just looked for one with a big trunk. Certain varieties will have more of a tendency to trunk up - Magic Carpet, Goldflame, and Goldmound are some that come to mind. You can reduce these greatly in one season. I think on this forum I showed a progression of this bonsai, but it might be on someone else's thread. Lots of color going on with the different varieties of spirea.

Thanks for the info Dave. Those cultivar names sound familiar - I think I planted a few of these trees as landscape schrubs earlier this year. I should take a look at the tags (if I still have them) to see if that is what I planted. If so, next step is to look at what trunks they have :D

Eric - about 4 years from 4 foot shrub to now. This is the first year in a proper pot.

I think you can use any variety of spirea for bonsai, but the best are twiggy and show nice color. Some varieties throw very long shoots and are more difficult to tame, but you never know until you try.
