Here is a picture of the main trunk and surface roots of the oldest amur maple I've ever seen. This tree is located on the quad at Illinois State University.
I went to undergrad and grad school there and I know exactally which tree that is. It is a really nice tree even with some of the bad branch cuts that have been made by the groundskeepers over the years. Thanks for posting.
A truly nasty looking trunk I've got a bonsai amur in a forest planting that's got much the same look--multiple shoots, gnarly stumpy ungainly trunk, bumps from severed limbs...although it doesn't have the nice surface roots of this tree.
this tree is on the aboridum inventory list of 1941 (first recorded list), but according to my teacher, he says he wouldn't be surprised if the tree was 100 years or more
