Hello Everyone,

I'm planning to take a vacation to Florida in May sometime and would like to buy some pre-bonsai while I"m down there. Any suggestions for good nurseries w/ excellent pre-bonsai material? I'll be flying in and out of the Miami area, but will have a car and will be driving all around south and central Florida. Thanks for any suggestions you might have!

Hi Patrick-

Eric has a new place in Fort Meyers and I believe he is up and running, but not sure.

If you are in the West Palm area, check out Mike Cartret's Palm Beach Bonsai. He has a great selection and awesome prices.

If you are coming up my way, (Deland, Central Florida), be sure to check out Mike Rogers. He has a great selection of azaleas and tropicals.

Let me know if you would like to stop by for a nice hand made pot or two;)

I stopped by Weigerts place last winter when passing thru Florida and I was impressed.
He has a HUGE selection of mostly tropical pre-bonsai stock.
The prices are very reasonable.
I purchased a Ficus 89 with about a 1.5 in caliper trunk for about $25,,,,,,

Definitly worth the trip !

Wigerts seems to have really improved since I last looked at them. I used to be able to only find a simple pdf of their stock, now they have a online store that's nice.

Wigerts nursery (West coast), Miami Tropical (East Coast), Durastone (Jim Smith,East Coast) and Old Florida Bonsai Nursery (JJ and Richard Turner, Vero Beach, just 3 or 4 miles apart from Durastone).

JJ and Richard's nursery is the best kept secret in Florida! My dear friends!!

For now the nursery is being taken care of by Jim Vanlandingham. You might have heard that Jim Smith's son Doug is very ill. The situation isn't good and prayers are much appreciated. If you all want to drop Jim a note of encouragement, that would be nice.

Talked with Jim V. At a club picnic/ demo this summer, He was saying he would be leaving Durastone to take care of a permananent display. Being he is one running the nursery now just got me wondering if it would remain open.

Went to Durastone this summer also, it is a great place. Jim V. was taking it easier than he normally would because the heat had gotten to him the week before. NO way I could do all the things he does in a day in that heat.

Sad news..

Just received this email, so sad..

Friends,

Jim Smith has asked me to let you all know that his son, Doug, died this afternoon while in hospice care. Jim and Billie were with him, and he had a peaceful end. As most of you know, Doug has been struggling with cancer and recently had a small stroke.

I’ve known Doug for seven or eight years, just a small bit of time in the world of Bonsai, but long enough to have called him my friend. I’ll miss his warmth and gentle humor, his generosity, and vast knowledge of things that grow and have roots.

Jim said that they have not yet made any arrangements, but expect to have a service of some type. I’ll send out a note as soon as I have any details.
