(Had to link sorry.)
This was a print I made into a scroll for a gift. Size is very narrow, about 1 foot wide by 4 feet long. This type of scroll works well with the discussion on bunjin (thinner trunks) in recent thread in my opinion. What do you think? Do you have a tree you would pair it with?

Tough to see the details you spoke of with the photo as presented. Or are you seeking an opinion of it's overall composition relative to a pairing with a certain style of tree?

Your description does make it sound very appealing and thought provoking.

I have been over this numerous times...Japanese sumi-e paintings often omit the details, which make them ideal for displaying with a bonsai...
I guess to rephrase my question, do you have a tree in your collection that you would like to display with this scroll? If you don't have a tree, what tree would you use with this display and why?
There are no correct answers just let your imagination do the work...

Mountain Hemlock or Shore Pine as I have those species in my collection, all yamadori and still in training.

Good. With the mountain hemlock would need to think of alpine lake setting. Shore pine near coast of Pacific and ocean. Seems like a good start for envisioning locale of the tree and story. Thank you for the replies.

I can see how the Shore Pine would work, as we live very close to the ocean and often watch the small wooden row boats in the Tyee pool (chinook, king salmon) early in the am or at dusk.

My thoughts are this: I would add puffy white clouds as a background all the way up to the tree, I would use a classic looking Black or White Japanese Pine for the tree and in the top right hand corner of scroll I would do a small Mt Fuji...
Just my thoughts...

I am ignorant regarding displays. But I would like to answer the question out of my personal instinct.
So, for me it would be definitely a flowering bonsai, similar to the photos above.
Preferably in cascading form like the 1st photo of a Teunis Jan Klein azalea, in order for the horizontal branch to make a smooth transition from the long vertical line of the scroll
2nd photo is a Tobie Kleynhans wisteria which color would complement the blue cloth that you have used
And the 3rd is such an a exquisite and fine Prunus mume by Michael bonsai.

Especially love your idea of the use of Black pine as it is associated near an ocean shoreline...

I like your ideas and how you are thinking of the aspect of the painting and how the design of the tree, or colors would complement one another....
Look up photos of Kameido Tenjin Shrine with wisteria in google and see some photos that would make second one work well.
How tall is third plant and what kind of stand was it on?

Jonathan, thank you for your kind words.

All the photos are random found on the internet through a search to locate trees within my vision for the appropriate bonsai to pair the scroll in question. I am sorry I cannot offer any imore nfo than what was already on the webpages.
