Very much a work in progress, I just published my first episode of the Bonsai & a Beer Podcast which should be available now in the itunes store if you search, "Bonsai & a Beer." Please go easy on this.

For this episode I sat down with Matt Reel and Tyler Sherrod on a late Saturday night. They were kind enough to let me interview them about their apprenticeship, Mr. Shinji Suzuki and several other Bonsai related questions.

Tyler and Matt are incredible guys, they are both extremely talented and have done what very few Americans have in completing a formal apprenticeship with one of the leading Bonsai professionals in the world, Shinji Suzuki. With their incredible Bonsai accomplishments, they are the type of guys you'd really want to hang out with, they're down to earth, friendly, respectful and really fun dudes.

I actually thought the audio quality was totally fine. I really enjoyed the podcast, I like the conversational nature that it took. Non-formal conversation is the way to go and exactly what you did. You asked good questions, overall great job. I will put a review on Itunes as well.

Now I am just crossing my fingers that you add more episodes. I wish I knew some top pro's personally and could help you get some more good interviews. If you ever decide to talk with some "regional expert" type people I could help hook that up :).

Ohh and you should add that Boon podcast you did, that was good as well :).

@yenling83 nobody expects the first few episodes to be perfectly produced, that comes in time. Just worry about content and the rest will come. Oh and yes, I am a podcast expert all of the sudden so don't worry, it's all true. I'm at work but will listen Sunday or Monday

Greatly appriciate the positive feedback guys! Very nice of you:)

Hi yenling. I enjoyed the podcast. Thanks very much for doing this. I very much like both Matt and Tyler - their close friendship developed during their apprenticeship as well as their easy going style made this a very enjoyable listen. I spent a few days at Boons working with the two of them as well as Paul and Daisaku. What a fun week!

Do you plan on more podcasts with the two of them, or will you be interviewing others?

Bummed that I missed you at Boons. Boon, Matt, Tyler, Daisaku=best people ever. Hope to see you there sometime in the future. I would really like to try talking with several different Bonsai people, although if Matt and Tyler are game, i'd love to pick their brains again. Really appriciate the feedback and kind words!!!

Update-I just uploaded a new version of the show with an audio quality that i'm happier about. Still love to hear anybody's thoughts:) Thank you so much for checking it out.

I was going to ask you the same question. Funny thing, Joe Rogan and Tim Ferriss are my top two favorite podcasts! One of my other top ones is Radio lab, im sure you have heard of it if you listen to Joe Rogan and Tim, Radiolab is really well done and interesting. I also get into Rich Roll Podcast if im in the right mood.

Would like to hear if anyone else has some favorite podcasts?

I listen to many... Humble and Fred (but it wouldn't be popular with Americans who like this current Govenrm't... can be picked up off their site), Sceptics Guide to the Universe, lots of the Adam Carroll stuff, Weird Medicine, and a smattering of what you mentioned and others that you didn't... it takes time to get used to someone's format, but I think if you want a good podcast, you'd study and follow the rules that the "old time" radio guys used to use; of course this does (hopefully) include ads, but "live reads" make ads more tolerable... I also really liked the Tommy Chong podcasts that he did with Paris (Chong), you can pick them up on cannibisradio.com... if you're new to Tommy Chong or his podcasts listen to one called "Aunt Irene"... warning, the music is really loud right off the hop, so keep the volume down when you're just starting the cast...

... I should add, that Humble and Fred is NOT for someone who is mildly to deeply religious, nor anyone who doesn't tolerate poo humour, or raunchy behaviour... basically, they are 55-60 year old grade 8 boys, and it can get a to be a little much even for me... but you might say that I'm a captive audience.

I really liked it. It is a good start. I have been considering starting a podcast of my own to fill the void. So far yours has far exceeded anything I could have done.

Here are my thoughts and suggestions.

General suggestions:
  • You need an intro with music. It will make it much more professional and tell listeners what they can expect from the show.
  • Add more of an introduction of yourself and your guests. As you grow you will get listeners who are not necessarily bonsai hobbyists.
  • Consider having a co-host. You may not always be able to have an interview.
  • Produce shows regularly. You will get more listeners it you can put out shows at regular intervals.
  • At the end of the show tell listeners how to contact you and your guests.
Feedback on this show:
  • The show started off a little slow but picked up as the show went on.
  • There were a few edits that would have made the show flow better but nothing major.
  • I think it needed to be broken up in some way. In time this may happen with ads.
  • It would have been good to bring in the beer part of the title more. Tell what beer you are drinking. What beers were available in Japan. This would have broken up the show also.
Plese don't take any of what I said negatively. You have the start of a really good show.
