I'm in as well Al, though I won't be able to get it going till late March at earliest. Seems you have a strong left coast contingent, so a right coast representation seems logical :)

I'll be basically doing both versions yours and Jason's. Each has its merits and disadvantages, at least here in the territories of the arctic tundra.

I feel your pain on the weather front. I would have a very hard time with even an ounce of snow. My wife hates the cold!

I am glad your trying a couple different methods. Seeing development in different areas of the nation and growout techniques will be a real treat for readers. I can hardly wait for results nationwide.

Hey, Sounds like fun. Tom, quit complaining, I'm pretty sure I've got it worse than you up here in Syracuse;) If Tom or Jason wants to send me some whips, I'm in the game too.

BTW.....

Anyone out there want to do one with me?

I think it would be a hoot to compare these trees together while we go thru the process. What have you got to lose, except time in making one if you don't do it now!

I'd be happy to do several with you. What size are you starting with and how do I get in on it?

Good question Chris.

Ok Al, since you are the one yo kick off the idea then we will let you determine what we start with. Should we start with something that already has a little girth to it or with whips? Or both?

Hey Gary,

You at home or here in Oregon?

I am thinking Als idea here was to document the development process and see what works best in different climates. We will let AL confirm that though.

You could always show us some of your handy work though :D

Hi Jason, I have tons of pics on flash drives but that is the end of my camera and computer skills. I will be heading west in a couple of weeks and get chris or someone or ANYONE :) to help me out.

OK Al, you got my attention. This sounds like fun and in my opinion that's what bonsai is all about.

As Jason asked, "...since you are the one to kick off the idea then we will let you determine what we start with. Should we start with something that already has a little girth to it or with whips? Or both?"

Best wishes,

Paul

Count me in too. It will actually be a good learning exercise for me with this new climate.

No Tom, I'm not missing the weather out there (75F here today:D)

A 83 degree difference between you and I. I think you should come back for a short stint so you don't become to spoiled. Your enjoying your new environment way to much ;)

Jason, you have to be very good at computer manipulation :D It took a couple of hours of trial and error just to get this far. I have better pics but I haven't figured out yet how to turn them sideways.:D

Very nice thread Al. I have found that this type of chopping works well on small ficus too. It allows you to create very interesting trunks in short order.
